Amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta) clearance from the central nervous system (CNS) maintains its low levels in brain. In Alzheimer's disease, Abeta accumulates in brain possibly because of its faulty CNS clearance and a deficient efflux across the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
