ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), an experimental tokamak device for nuclear fusion research, requires an electrical power up to a few hundred MVA for a time period of 10 – 20 s. Static converters powered by flywheel generators are used to feed the magnet coils of AUG. Engineering activities devoted to optimising the existing power supply by static var compensators (SVC) are under way to satisfy future power demands.
