The enzyme 5α-reductase plays a key role on several brain functions controlling the formation of anxiolytic/anesthetic steroids derived from progesterone and deoxycorticosterone, the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, and the removal of excess of potentially neurotoxic steroids.
