This review describes new developments in the study of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, a component of epigenetics. We start by examining the basic concepts of the field and the mechanisms that underlie epigenetic inheritance. We present a comprehensive review of transgenerational cellular epigenetic inheritance among different taxa in the form of a table, and discuss the data contained therein. The analysis of these data shows that epigenetic inheritance is ubiquitous and suggests… Expand
Historical Perspective of Transgenerational Epigenetics
TLDR
To better understand transgenerational epigenetics as it exists today, it must trace the concepts of Lamarckian and Darwinian inheritance, and Waddington’s epigenetics from their conception and their subsequent evolution and expansion within different scientific disciplines. Expand
Epigenetic inheritance and reproductive mode in plants and animals.
TLDR
This review systematically reviewed over 500 studies from the past 5 years to identify trends in the frequency of epigenetic inheritance due to differences in reproductive mode and germline development, providing a framework to guide future studies towards understanding the generational persistence and eco-evolutionary significance of epigenomic patterns. Expand
The evolutionary implications of epigenetic inheritance
TLDR
It is argued that the many evolutionary consequences of epigenetic inheritance open up new research areas and require the extension of the evolutionary synthesis beyond the current neo-Darwinian model. Expand
Epigenetic variation: origin and transgenerational inheritance.
TLDR
Progress in characterizing natural epigenetic variants in model and nonmodel plant species is reviewed and how this work is helping to delineate the role of epigenetic changes in evolution is reviewed. Expand
Epigenetics and inheritance of phenotype variation in livestock
TLDR
Examples of epigenetic mechanisms governing animal phenotype and behaviour, and the importance of these findings in respect to animal studies, and livestock in general, are reviewed. Expand
Three epigenetic information channels and their different roles in evolution
TLDR
It is shown that epigenetic mechanisms can serve two fundamentally different functions in transgenerational inheritance: (i) selection‐based effects, which carry adaptive information in virtue of selection over many generations of reliable transmission; and (ii) detection‐basedeffects, which are a transgenerations form of adaptive phenotypic plasticity. TLDR
This work has suggested that parental experiences can be transmitted behaviorally, through in utero exposure of the developing fetus to the maternal environment, or through either the male or female germline. Expand
Transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in plants.
TLDR
The information gathered during the last 60 years on naturally occurring and induced epialleles and paramutations in plants is recapitulate and the major players of epigenetic regulation and their importance in controlling stress responses are presented. Expand
Epigenetics and transgenerational transfer: a physiological perspective
TLDR
How the concepts of epigenetics and maternal effects both overlap with, and are distinct from, each other are discussed and a construct by which to integrate these concepts into the design of future investigations in animal physiology is offered. Expand
Evolutionary Perspectives on Transgenerational Epigenetics
TLDR
Theoretical models suggest that somatic epigenetic inheritance can be favored under a wide range of conditions and provide a starting point for proof-of-principle experimental tests and evaluation of the adaptive significance of observed patterns of epigenetic stability in natural populations. TLDR
It is suggested that the ramifications of epigenetics in plant biology are immense, yet unappreciated, and greater knowledge of patterns of epigenetic variation may be informative in taxonomy and systematics, as well as population biology and conservation. Expand
The Changing Concept of Epigenetics
TLDR
Recognizing that there are epigenetic inheritance systems through which non‐DNA variations can be transmitted in cell and organismal lineages broadens the concept of heredity and challenges the widely accepted gene‐centered neo‐Darwinian version of Darwinism. Expand
Epigenetics and its implications for plant biology. 1. The epigenetic network in plants.
TLDR
How epigenetic systems in plants were elucidated is addressed and there is a discussion on how the different components of the epigenetic system--regulating DNA methylation, histones and their post-translational modification, and pathways recognizing aberrant transcripts--may work together. Expand
Modifiers of epigenetic reprogramming show paternal effects in the mouse
TLDR
Paternal effects of this type have not been reported previously in mammals and suggest that the untransmitted genotype of male parents can influence the phenotype of their offspring. Expand
Epigenetics and plant evolution.
TLDR
An introduction to epigenetic mechanisms in plants is provided, and some of the empirical studies illustrative of the possible connections between evolution and epigenetically mediated alterations in gene expression and morphology are highlighted. Expand

In most discussions of the evolution of sex chromosomes, it is presumed that the morphological differences between the X and Y were initiated by genetic changes. An alternative possibility is that,Expand

TLDR
The increasing realization of the influence of epigenetics in phenotypes means that the molecular mechanisms behind phenotypic differences in genetically identical organisms can be explored and might yet challenge the fundamental principles of complex biology. Expand
The inheritance of acquired epigenetic variations.
TLDR
Heritable chromatin variations may also alter the frequency and distribution of classical mutations and meiotic recombination, and inherited epigenetic changes in the structure of chromatin can influence neo-Darwinian evolution as well as cause a type of "Lamarckian" inheritance. Expand
Evidence, mechanisms and models for the inheritance of acquired characters
TLDR
Simple models of epigenetic inheritance in asexual and sexual organisms show that in populations of asexual unicellular organisms, the distinctive properties of induced epigenetic variations mean that the variations may be retained for many generations after the inducing stimulus is removed, even in the absence of selection. Expand
Epigenetics for ecologists.
TLDR
Ecologists should start using a combination of experimental approaches borrowed from ecological genetics, novel techniques to analyse and manipulate epigenetic variation, and genomic tools, to investigate the extent and structure of epigenetics variation within and among natural populations, as well as the interrelations between epigenetic variations, phenotypic variation and ecological interactions.
