The pleiotropic cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 is a key player in the onset of skeletal muscle fibrosis, which hampers tissue repair. However, the molecular mechanisms implicated in TGFbeta1-dependent transdifferentiation of myoblasts into myofibroblasts are presently unknown.
