Although transfer of learning was among the very first issues addressed by early psychologists, the extant literature remains characterized by inconsistent measurement of transfer and significant variability in findings. This article presents a meta-analysis of 89 empirical studies that explore the impact of predictive factors (e.g., trainee characteristics, work environment, training interventions) on the transfer of training to different tasks and contexts. We also examine moderator effects…

Training transfer: a systematic review of the impact of inner setting factors

Although few studies have examined the impact of inner setting factors on training transfer, these results suggest organizational context is important to consider with training efforts and have important implications for individuals in the broader health professions educational field.

Training transfer: a systematic review of the impact of inner setting factors

Consistent with Baldwin and Ford’s model (Pers Psychol 41(1):63–105, 1988), training transfer is defined as the generalization of learning from a training to everyday practice in the workplace. The

The Role of Work Environment in Training Sustainment: A Meta-Analysis

Findings illuminate the relative contribution of peer, supervisor, and organizational support to transfer and sustainment of training as an important yet understudied measure of the effectiveness of workplace training.

Work Environment and Training Transfer Intentions: Does Organizational Justice Moderate Their Relationship?

The work environment plays a vital role in the transfer of the newly attained knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) at the workplace. In the past decades, a series of studies have investigated the

Personality traits, social support, and training transfer: The mediating mechanism of motivation to improve work through learning

Purpose Substantially few or no known empirical studies have explicitly focused on the higher-order construct of motivation in human resource development (HRD), namely motivation to improve work

A Tale of Two Transfers: Disentangling Maximum and Typical Transfer and Their Respective Predictors

AbstractPurpose Research on transfer of training has been characterized by a lack of precision in distinguishing between the ability to transfer (i.e., “can do”), and the motivation to transfer

The moderating effect of coworkers’ training participation on the influence of peer support in the transfer process

Purpose The impact of the number of coworkers participating in training on transfer outcomes has largely been overlooked. This paper aims to examine whether the number of coworkers participating in

The Influence of Specific Supervisor Support Types on Transfer of Training: Examining the Mediating Effect of Training Retention

The aim of this study was to examine the differential effects of specific types of supervisor support on transfer of training, taking into account established trainee characteristics, such as

Toward an integrative theory of training motivation: a meta-analytic path analysis of 20 years of research.

Meta-analytically summarizes the literature on training motivation, its antecedents, and its relationships with training outcomes such as declarative knowledge, skill acquisition, and transfer and shows that training motivation explained incremental variance in training outcomes beyond the effects of cognitive ability.

Effectiveness of error management training: a meta-analysis.

Results suggest that EMT may be better suited than error-avoidant training methods for promotion of transfer to novel tasks and both active exploration and error encouragement were identified as effective elements in EMT.

Individual and contextual influences on multiple dimensions of training effectiveness

Purpose – To investigate individual and contextual antecedents of learning, transfer of learning, training generalization and training maintenance in a work context.Design/methodology/approach – The

DISPOSITIONAL INFLUENCES ON TRANSFER OF LEARNING IN MULTISTAGE TRAINING PROGRAMS

The training effectiveness literature has paid little attention to the potentially dynamic interaction of individual differences with various phases of training in determining ultimate training

What predicts skill transfer? An exploratory study of goal orientation, training self‐efficacy and organizational supports

Results from a study examining the predictors of skill transfer from an instructional to a work environment are presented. Prior research indicates that skill transfer is a function of both

TRANSFER OF TRAINING: A REVIEW AND DIRECTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

Transfer of training is of paramount concern for training researchers and practitioners. Despite research efforts, there is a growing concern over the “transfer problem.” The purpose of this paper is

Effects of Practice Conditions and Supplemental Training Method on Cognitive Learning and Interpersonal Skill Generalization.

Organizational behavior and human decision processes
  • 1998
Results showed that superior cognitive learning and greater time on task were the mechanisms that supported interpersonal-skill transfer for trainees in the stressful practice/ mastery-oriented training condition when compared with the other experimental groups.

A rewiew of transfer of training studies in the past decade

A conceptual framework is developed for this article to better present the "popular" constructs that have been tested empirically and highlight that some individual, motivational and enviromental factors are related to transfer to training.

Transfer of Training: An Updated Review and Analysis

This study updates the Baldwin and Ford (1988) review of the empirical articles published on training transfer. The updated review and analysis revolves around the four key limitations noted in the

Social Support in the Workplace and Training Transfer: A Longitudinal Analysis
