Iron deficiency anemia is one of the major nutritional deficiency disorders. Iron deficiency anemia occurs due to decreased absorption of iron from diet, chronic blood loss and other associated diseases. The importance of iron and deleterious effects of iron deficiency anemia are discussed briefly in this review followed by the transdermal approaches to deliver iron. Transdermal delivery of iron would be able to overcome the side effects associated with conventional oral and parenteral iron…

Efficacy of transdermal delivery of liposomal micronutrients through body oil massage on neurodevelopmental and micronutrient deficiency status in infants: results of a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial
TLDR
Use of LMF oil for prevention of nutritional deficiency did not offer significant protection against nutritional anemia but prevented vitamin D deficiency to some extent with improvement in 25-OH-D at 12 months.
Development and Implementation of Liposomal Encapsulated Micronutrient Fortified Body Oil Intervention for Infant Massage: An Innovative Concept to Prevent Micronutrient Deficiencies in Children
TLDR
The experience of developing an intervention in the form of body oil containing nanosized liposomes of iron and micro-nutrients built on the social context of infant oil massage using a theory of change approach is described.
Therapeutic applications of transdermal microneedles.
TLDR
The current use of microneedles as a cost effective method for the self-administration of therapeutics and their utility in the generation of effective vaccination delivery platforms are reviewed.

Treatment of iron deficiency anemia: are monomeric iron compounds suitable for parenteral administration?
TLDR
It is demonstrated that infusion of ferric pyrophosphate into the circulation via the dialysate is safe and effective in maintaining iron balance in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
Irontophoresis: transdermal delivery of iron by iontophoresis.
TLDR
Irontophoresis based iron therapy could be relatively more patient compliant, safe and effective treatment for iron deficiency anemia condition and passive transdermal delivery of FPP is poor due to the impermeable skin barrier.
Toxicity of parenteral iron dextran therapy.
TLDR
The purpose of this review is to identify and elucidate the mechanisms of the acute and chronic toxicities associated with parenteral iron dextran use.
Parenteral iron therapy options
TLDR
The increased availability of multiple parenteral iron preparations should decrease the need to use red cell transfusions in patients with iron‐deficiency anemia.
Minimally invasive transdermal delivery of iron-dextran.
TLDR
It is suggested that microneedle-mediated delivery of ID could be developed as a potential treatment method for iron-deficiency anemia by investigating the plausibility of transdermal delivery of Iron-dextran facilitated by micronees, as an alternative to parenteral iron therapy.
Microporation and ‘Iron’tophoresis for Treating Iron Deficiency Anemia
TLDR
Microneedle and iontophoresis mediated delivery of iron via transdermal route could be developed as a potential treatment for iron deficiency anemia.
Parenteral Iron Therapy
TLDR
It should be emphasised that few patients with iron deficiency require parenteral therapy, and arguments as to its usc tend to focus more on the indications for such treatment and on the choice of preparation from those that are available.
