Thyroid hormone (TH) is essential for normal development, growth and metabolism. Its effects were thought to be principally mediated through triiodothyronine (T3), acting as a ligand for the nuclear TH receptors (TRs) α and β residing on thyroid hormone response elements (TREs) in the promoter of TH target genes.
