Interferon (IFN)-gamma-induced indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) activity is enhanced synergistically by interleukin (IL-)1, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and LPS in IFN-treated macrophages by increasing IDO mRNA concentration. These studies demonstrate that IFN-treated HeLa cells also exhibit dose-dependent enhancement of IDO induction by TNF-alpha and IL-1, with maximal effects at concentrations of 5 ng/ml and 3 ng/ml, respectively.
