Cottontail rabbit papillomavirus (CRPV) early proteins are present at very low levels in virus-induced tumors and cannot be detected by immunological methods. Furthermore, cells in culture are not readily transformed by the virus. To overcome these difficulties in identifying and characterizing the putative transforming protein(s) coded by the E6 open reading frame, the early cottontail rabbit papillomavirus region was expressed under the control of the late simian virus 40 promoter.
