This study used a driving simulator to investigate whether the presence of pedestrians and traffic engineering designs that reported to have reduction effects on overall traffic speed at intersections can facilitate drivers adopting lower impact speed behaviors at pedestrian crossings. Twenty-eight men (M age = 39.9 yr., SD = 11.5) with drivers’ licenses participated. Nine studied measures were obtained from the speed profiles of each participant. A 14-km virtual road was presented to the…

Low-Cost Measures for Reducing Speeds at Curves on Two-Lane Rural Highways
This paper investigated, by means of a dynamic driving-simulator experiment, drivers' behavior at curves on rural two-lane highways in relation to different advance warning signs, perceptual
Effects of Pedestrians' Visibility and Signs on Motorists' Yielding
TLDR
The effects of a pedestrian wearing bright versus drab clothing on motorists' behavior were assessed and it was found that motorists were more likely to stop for a brightly clothed pedestrian.
In-Roadway “Yield to Pedestrians” Signs
TLDR
Comparing the effect of placing in-roadway signs at the crosswalk, 20 ft in advance of the crosswalks, and at all three locations on driver yielding behavior suggested that the in- Roadway sign is likely effective because the inroadway placement is particularly salient to drivers.
Impacts of Alternative Yield Sign Placement on Pedestrian Safety
Although pedestrian crashes account for only 1% of reported motor vehicle crashes in the United States, pedestrian crashes account for 14% of fatal crashes. Pedestrians are at a higher risk of
