A social survey was carried out during the summer in January and February 1979 in three districts in Christchurch, New Zealand. Each district was divided into three categories - 'Noisy', 'Moderate' and 'Quiet', and a saturation oral survey produced 1660 valid responses. Noise surveys were carried out durinq 1979 at 27 sites and Leq, L10, LNP.and TNI determined. The overall subjective response to traffic noise is in general agreement with overseas results.
