Milkfish (Chanos chanos) aquaculture hasa long antiquity on the island of Nauru(Pacific Ocean), predating European contact.Fry were caught in the surf and transferred tobrackish water ponds in the island's interior. While most of the fry died, large numberssurvived. They were harvested when the milkfishreached a body weight of abut 2 pounds. Thispaper describes the traditional approaches toacquaculture and puts them into a moderncontext.

The feasibility of milkfish (Chanos chanos) aquaculture in Solomon Islands

This report synthesizes the current knowledge about milkfish farming and presents results of a 4-year study on the potential for milkfish aquaculture in Solomon Islands.

In the Face of Poverty Mangrove Wetlands are Lifelines: Viability Indicators in Silvofishery Initiatives along the Kenyan Coast Assessing Polyculture of Milkfish (Chanos chanos) and Mullets (Mugil mugil)

Milkfish (Chanos chanos) have been grown in polyculture with mullets (Mugil cephalus) in marine coastal ponds to increase productivity by more efficiently utilizing ecological resources within an

Evaluating the piscicide rotenone as an option for eradication of invasive Mozambique tilapia in a Hawaiian brackish-water wetland complex.

Results demonstrate rotenone’s potential for non-native fish eradication in brackish-water habitats, with benefit of low mortality to certain macro-invertebrates.

Na Vuku Makawa ni Qoli: Indigenous Fishing Knowledge (IFK) in Fiji and the Pacific

The time-tested Indigenous fishing knowledge (IFK) of Fiji and the Pacific Islands is seriously threatened due to the commercialization of fishing, breakdown of traditional communal leadership and

Chinese Plantation Heritage on Malolo Lailai, Mamanuca Group, Fiji

The Chinese presence in the Pacific Islands during the nineteenth and early twentieth century has been largely explored through the lens of indentured labor as well as small island traders, whereas

Effectiveness and outcomes of invasive species removal in Hawaiian streams

Despite aquatic invasive species (AIS) being a widely recognized threat to native biodiversity in streams on subtropical and tropical oceanic islands across the Pacific, AIS management has been

The Imagery of Postcards sold in Micronesia during the German Colonial Period

The first picture postcards of Micronesia were produced for the German colonies. Starting in 1898, cards existed for the Marshall Islands, soon followed by cards for Pohnpei, Yap, Palau and the

Survival of captive milkfish Chanos chanos Forsskal broodstock subjected to handling and transport

The assistance of staff at the Igang Marine Substation and the Big Hatchery in Tigbauan is acknowledged. Additional assistance was provided by Editha Panes, Pastor Denusta, Sherlito Balacanta,

Biology of milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal)

The author recommends Ecology and Farming of Milkfish for an updated version of this book for those interested in fish conservation.

Milkfish (Chanos chanos) production and water quality in brackishwater ponds at different feeding levels and frequencies

Results suggest that supplemental feeding for milkfish grown in brackish water ponds should not be more than 4 % of body weight and 38 kg feed ha-1 day-1 for maintenance of good water quality and for economical operation.

New Species for Coastal Aquaculture in the Tropical Pacific – Constraints, Prospects and Considerations

Coastal aquaculture in the Pacific will need to focus either on species of high value, or those that yield non-perishable products, to overcome several constraints, including, transport problems, fragile ecosystems, lack of suitable sites, limited economies, and the effects of customary marine tenure on access to growout sites.

Nutritional condition of larval milkfish,Chanos chanos, occurring in the surf zone

Although total length of the wild-larvae did not show serial changes, their otolith increment counts showed continuous increases, indicating that the larvae sojourned in the surf zone for several days, and milkfish larvae remaining in the Surf Zone were concluded as being under insufficient nutritional conditions.

Milkfish populations throughout the range show high genetic variation but low genetic divergence, similar to many other commercially important teleosts, particularly its ecology and physiology.

Dietary vitamin C and E supplementation and reproduction of milkfish Chanos chanos Forsskal

The results confirm the essentiality of vitamin C supplementation in producing more spawns with good egg and larval quality and the production of an adequate volume of good quality eggs and larvae to support hatchery operation.
