The present study was carried out to evaluate the toxico-pathological manifestation of lead acetate toxicity in broiler chickens with protective effect of Opuntia elatior fruit juice and extract of Withania somnifera . Lead acetate was administered at dose rate of 500 ppm in feed, P.O. for 21 days while Opuntia elatior fruit juice (3 ml/kg, P.O) and hydro-alcoholic extract of Withania somnifera (100 mg/kg) were administrated alone and in combination for consecutive 21 days in chickens of…

Protective Effect of Opuntia dillenii Haw Fruit against Lead Acetate-Induced Hepatotoxicity: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Data suggest that OHAE may have hepatoprotective effects against Pb-induced liver toxicity both in vitro and in vivo by its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Exposure to environmental heavy metal (cadmium) through feed and its effect on bio-histomorphological changes in commercial quail

Investigating the toxic effects of Cd exposure in commercial quail chicks found decreases in weight gain significantly among the Cd treated groups and decreased serum creatinine attributed to gross and histo-pathological changes in liver and kidney respectively.

Dose and duration-dependent toxicological evaluation of lead acetate in chicks

The present study showed that the bodyweight of chickens was not affected significantly by lead acetate exposure, and the levels of MCHC, PCV, TEC, Hb, LDL, HDL, and total protein were found to be significantly decreased while WBC, LDC, and ALT profile were enhanced due to administration of Lead acetate.

Natural Antimicrobial Molecules from Opuntia spp. and Their Role in Poultry Nutrition

Effects of dietary supplementation of lead (Pb) on biochemical, gross and histo-morphological changes in different organs of broiler chicken

Lead toxicity in broiler had a dose-dependent effect on body weight gain, blood parameters, gross and histological changes.

Haemato-biochemical alterations induced by lead acetate toxicity in wistar rats -

No significant change was observed in neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil and monocyte count in any treatment groups, whereas the lymphocyte count decreased significantly in group III and IV, and dose dependant significant reductions in TEC, Hb, PCV and TLC were observed.

Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Mill. fruit juice protects liver from carbon tetrachloride‐induced injury

Data show that O. ficus indica fruit juice administration exerts protective and curative effects against the CCl4‐induced degenerative process in rat liver, and this data are in agreement with the functional improvement of hepatocytes.

It is apparent from these findings that chickens are more resistant to lead poisoning than humans, horses, dogs and wild fowl such as ducks.

Activities of Antioxidant and Detoxifying Enzymes in Rats after Lead Exposure

Investigating the activity response of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (soD) and detoxifying enzyme glutathione-s-transferase (gst) of rats exposed to lead found changes related to the organs and to the sex of animals could be a compensatory response to different lead accumulation in the male and female organs.

Anti-stress activity of hydro-alcoholic extract of Eugenia caryophyllus buds (clove)

The hydro-alcoholic extract of clove at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg orally possesses good anti-stress activity, which reduced the development of cold restraint induced gastric ulcers and prevented the biochemical changes induced by sound stress.

Abnormalities of erythrocytes and renal tubules of chicks poisoned with lead.

In studies by light and electron microscopy various stages of mitosis were observed in the erythrocytes in the peripheral blood of chicks fed either dose of 5000 or 10,000 ppm.

Chemical characterization and biological effects of Sicilian Opuntia ficus indica (L.) mill. Fruit juice: antioxidant and antiulcerogenic activity.

The juice of whole fruits of Sicilian cultivars of prickly pear was investigated, and the contents of ascorbic acid, total polyphenols, and flavonoids were determined and showed antioxidant activity in the DPPH(*) test.

Antioxidants - vitamins B6, C and E, zinc, taurine, N-acetylcysteine, and alpha-lipoic acid - have been studied in lead-exposed animals and the evidence for their use in lead exposure, alone and in conjunction with chelating agents, is reviewed.
