heart failure without pain. In two recent papers (Papp, 1952; Roseman, 1954) on painless cardiac infarction the incidence is given as 4.6% (7 out of 150) and 4.5% (10 out of 220). In the present series it was 27% (24 out of 89), and this painless infarction was much commoner in the patients in the third-class wards; while Hunter (1946), in the U.S.A., found painless infarction commoner in the poor negro than in the poor white patient.
