General relativity is a deterministic theory with non-fixed causal structure. Quantum theory is a probabilistic theory with fixed causal structure. In this paper, we build a framework for probabilistic theories with non-fixed causal structure. This combines the radical elements of general relativity and quantum theory. We adopt an operational methodology for the purposes of theory construction (though without committing to operationalism as a fundamental philosophy). The key idea in the… Expand

Quantum Gravity Computers: On the Theory of Computation with Indefinite Causal Structure
A quantum gravity computer is one for which the particular effects of quantum gravity are relevant. In general relativity, causal structure is non-fixed. In quantum theory non-fixed quantities areExpand
Philosophy of Quantum Information and Entanglement: Formalism locality in quantum theory and quantum gravity
We expect a theory of Quantum Gravity to be both probabilistic and have indefinite causal structure. Indefinite causal structure poses particular problems for theory formulation since many of theExpand

Quantum Indefinite Spacetime: Part II
We adopt an operational mode of thinking to study spacetime fluctuations and their impacts on questions of quantum gravity. Particular emphasis is put on studying causal structure fluctuations. TheExpand
Information Processing Structure of Quantum Gravity
TLDR
This work provides a model for the information processing structure of quantum gravity, and shows that the quantum gravity environment is an information resource-pool from which valuable information can be extracted and can be exploited in quantum computations. Expand
Bell’s theorem for temporal order
TLDR
A thought experiment is considered where a massive body in a spatial superposition leads to entanglement of temporal orders between time-like events, resulting in a violation of a Bell-type inequality. Expand
Theory of quantum gravity information processing
TLDR
It is shown that the quantum gravity environment is an information resource-pool from which valuable information can be extracted and allows the separate local parties to simulate remote outputs from the local environment state, through the process of remote simulation. Expand
Spacetime symmetries and the qubit Bloch ball: A physical derivation of finite-dimensional quantum theory and the number of spatial dimensions
Quantum theory and relativity are the pillar theories on which our understanding of physics is based. Poincaré invariance is a fundamental physical principle stating that the experimental resultsExpand
A categorical semantics for causal structure
TLDR
This framework enables one to define families of processes which are consistent with arbitrary acyclic causal orderings and is general enough to accommodate recently-proposed generalisations of classical and quantum theory where processes only need to have a fixed causal ordering locally, but globally allow indefinite causal ordering. Expand
Indefinite causal structures for continuous-variable systems
In all our well-established theories, it is assumed that events are embedded in a global causal structure such that, for every pair of events, the causal order between them is always fixed. However,Expand

Probability Theories with Dynamic Causal Structure : A New Framework for Quantum Gravity
Quantum theory is a probabilistic theory with fixed causal structure. General relativity is a deterministic theory but where the causal structure is dynamic. It is reasonable to expect that quantumExpand
An invitation to loop quantum gravity
We describe the basic assumptions and key results of loop quantum gravity, which is a background independent approach to quantum gravity. The emphasis is on the basic physical principles and how oneExpand
Canonical quantization of general relativity in discrete space-times.
TLDR
This work analyzes discrete lattice general relativity and develops a canonical formalism that allows one to treat constrained theories in Lorentzian signature space-times in a manner that makes the quantization of the theories conceptually clear, albeit computationally involved. Expand

Fundamental decoherence from quantum gravity: a pedagogical review
We present a discussion of the fundamental loss of unitarity that appears in quantum mechanics due to the use of a physical apparatus to measure time. This induces a decoherence effect that isExpand
Unified dynamics for microscopic and macroscopic systems.
TLDR
A modified quantum dynamics for the description of macroscopic objects is constructed and it is shown that it forbids the occurrence of linear superpositions of states localized in far-away spatial regions and induces an evolution agreeing with classical mechanics. Expand
