OBJECTIVE This is a review of progress made in the understanding of Tourette syndrome (TS) during the past decade including models of pathogenesis, state-of-the-art assessment techniques, and treatment. METHOD Computerized literature searches were conducted under the key words "Tourette syndrome," "Tourette disorder," and "tics." Only references from 1996-2006 were included. RESULTS Studies have documented the natural history of TS and the finding that tics usually improve by the end of the…

Assessment and treatment of Tourette Syndrome: An evidence-based review
Abstract Tourette Syndrome is characterized by several motor tics and at least one vocal tics. Recent studies suggest that this disorder currently impairs about 0.6% of the population of the Western
Tourette’s Syndrome and Role of Tetrabenazine
TLDR
Results of a retrospective chart review showed that 2 years’ treatment with tetrabenazine resulted in an improvement in functioning and TS-related symptoms in over 80% of patients, findings that suggest that treatment with ritussenazine may have long-term benefits, and suggest that tetrABenazine may be suitable as add-on therapy in patients for whom additional suppression of tics is required.
Tic disorders revisited: introduction of the term “tic spectrum disorders”
TLDR
The results suggest that both disorders exist along a symptom severity continuum of which TS constitutes a more severe and CMTD a less severe form, and suggest the introduction of the term “tic spectrum disorders”, instead of using different diagnostic categories.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Comorbidities of Tourette's Syndrome and Bipolar Disorder in A 10‐Year‐Old Boy
A search for the common ground between Tic; Obsessive-compulsive and Autism Spectrum Disorders: part I, Tic disorders
TLDR
The goal is to describe the complex endophenotype of these patients in an effort to better define gene markers that underlie these heterogeneous clinical syndromes.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's disorder: where are we now?
This special issue of the Journal provides an update on pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette’s disorder (TD): where are we now, and where are we going? Tic disorders and OCD are
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome
TLDR
Future research that integrates clinical and neurobiological data, including neuroimaging and genetics, is expected to reveal the pathogenesis of GTS at the neural circuit level, which may lead to targeted interventions.
The metabolic landscape of Tourette syndrome
TLDR
Tourette syndrome poses several unique challenges that may account for the paucity of conclusive functional neuroimaging studies, and these include tic variability, movement artifact, and the difficulty of imaging children.

TLDR
Baclofen/botolinum toxin type A are very effective, safe, and reliable in the treatment of tics/Tourette's syndrome and it is worthwhile considering this treatment approach in patients with tics in order to reduce or avoid the side effects of other medications.
Aripiprazole for the treatment of Tourette's disorder.
TLDR
Aripiprazole, a newer atypical antipsychotic with a unique pharmacodynamic profile, appears to be efficacious in treatment of tics in Tourette's disorder, thus impressing upon the need for placebo-controlled trials in the management of this neuropsychiatric syndrome.
Neurobiology and neuroimmunology of Tourette’s syndrome: an update
TLDR
It is concluded that Tourette’s syndrome is a heterogeneous disorder, and that immune factors may indeed be involved in some patients, and the proposed autoimmune hypothesis of Tourette's syndrome is challenged.

A review of the Tourette’s syndrome in children, focusing on treatment options, including a drug-by-drug evaluation of available pharmacologic agents and other treatments, is provided.

Correlating the neurologic status to hypothalamic dysregulation, the data presented in this study strengthen the hypothesis of an idiopathic hypothalamic disorder underlying the Tourette syndrome cascade.
The Tourette Syndrome Diagnostic Confidence Index
TLDR
The DCI is a useful, practicable instrument in the clinic or research practice allowing an assessment of lifetime likelihood of TS and its correlation with other instruments and associations with psychopathology provide support for its being a lifetime measure of TS.

The view that Tourette's Disorder is a persistent disorder is supported, but a dissociation between tic persistence and tic-associated dysfunction is suggested.
