Our previous studies have demonstrated that the total flavonoids (XBXT-2) isolated from the extract of Xiaobuxin-Tang (XBXT), a traditional Chinese herbal decoction, ameliorated behavioral alterations and hippocampal dysfunctions in chronically stressed rats. Studies over the last decades have suggested that the hyperactivity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the most consistent findings in stress-related depression. Herein, we used the same chronic mild stress model of…

Figures from this paper

Antidepressant-like effects and memory enhancement of a herbal formula in mice exposed to chronic mild stress
TLDR
The results suggest that SYG has an antidepressant-like action and enhances cognition by modulating the serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine levels in the prefrontal cortex.
Effects and Mechanisms of Medicinal Plants on Stress Hormone (Cortisol) : A Systematic Review
TLDR
The plants and their derivatives help regulate the key mediators and cytokines effective in stress response via targeting the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and can induce anti-stress properties via changing and modulating oxidative and nitrosative stress biomarkers.
Anxiolytic Effects of Flavonoids in Animal Models of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
TLDR
The present study aims to examine the effect of flavonoids in alleviating the enhanced anxiety and fear response induced in two PTSD animal models and assess the changes of brain monoaminergic neurotransmitters after chronic flavonoid administration.
JIEYUANSHEN DECOCTION EXERTS ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECTS ON DEPRESSIVE RAT MODEL VIA REGULATING HPA AXIS AND THE LEVEL OF AMINO ACIDS NEUROTRANSMITTER
TLDR
JYAS-D had a significant antidepressant-like effect on rat model through regulating serum concentration of CORT, ACTH and CRH, increasing the content of hippocampus GR and regulating the equilibrium of amino acids neurotransmitter.
Antidepressant-like effects and mechanism of action of SYG in depression model in rats.
TLDR
The results suggest that SYG alleviates depression induced by LH and CMS model, and the antidepressant-like activity of SYG is likely mediated by activation the BDNF signal pathway in the hippocampus.
Zuogui Jiangtang Jieyu Formulation Prevents Hyperglycaemia and Depressive-Like Behaviour in Rats by Reducing the Glucocorticoid Level in Plasma and Hippocampus
TLDR
ZGJTJY inhibits the expression of 11β-HSD1 and increases GR in hippocampus and subsequently modulates blood glucose levels, and therefore it is potential property that ZGJ TJY could be of benefit for the treatment of behavior and cognitive function of diabetes-related depression.
Effects of troxerutin on anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors induced by chronic mild stress in adult male rats
TLDR
Troxerutin demonstrated anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like activities in rodents, which supports the use of herbal medicine in the mood disorders.

Antidepressant effect of total flavonoids extracted from Xiaobuxin-Tang in forced swimming tests and learned helplessness in rats and mice
TLDR
XBXT-2 possesses significant antidepressant-like effect and the mechanism may involve the inhibition of the hyperaction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
Role for serotonin in the antidepressant-like effect of a flavonoid extract of Xiaobuxin-Tang
Flavonoids of St. John's Wort reduce HPA axis function in the rat.
TLDR
The results support the hypothesis that flavonoids of SJW play an important role in the modulation of HPA axis function and down-regulated circulating plasma levels of ACTH and corticosterone.
Antidepressant-like Effect of l-perillaldehyde in Stress-induced Depression-like Model Mice through Regulation of the Olfactory Nervous System
TLDR
The results suggest that the inhalation of PAH shows antidepressant-like activity through the olfactory nervous function in mice prepared by subjection to a combination of forced swimming and chronic mild stresses.
[Formation mechanisms of stress adaptation: role of functional coupling of glucocorticoids and brain serotonergic nervous system].
TLDR
The functional coupling of glucocorticoid-mineralocortICoid/glucocortioid receptors and serotonergic neurons in the brain may play a significant role in the recognition of stress stimuli and induction of stress adaptation, and dysfunction of this coupling system may be related to the onset of affective disorders.
The effects of antidepressants on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
TLDR
The disruption of the HPA may be more a contributing factor to depression than other biological abnormalities, and the effects of antidepressants on HPA regulation may be attributed in part to regulation of the multidrug resistance protein transporter, P-glycoprotein.
