A method for measurement of total dietary fiber (TDF) has been validated. This method is applicable to plant materials, foods, and food ingredients as consumed, consistent with the 2009 CODEX definition (ALINORM 09/32/REP), and measures insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) and soluble dietary fiber (SDF), comprising SDF that precipitates in the presence of 78% ethanol (SDFP) and SDF that remains soluble in the presence of 78% ethanol (SDFS). The method is an update of AOAC Method 2009.01 and addresses…

Recent Techniques in Nutrient Analysis for Food Composition Database

An overview of recent techniques that can be used for sample preparation and instrumentation for food analysis which can provide wide options to the analysts in providing data to their FCD is provided.

Measurement of Available Carbohydrates in Cereal and Cereal Products, Dairy Products, Vegetables, Fruit, and Related Food Products and Animal Feeds: First Action 2020.07

A unique method has been developed for the direct measurement of available carbohydrates, entailing separate measurement of glucose, fructose, and galactose, information of value in determining the glycemic index of foods.

Influence of potato Variety on Phenolic Content, In-vitro Starch Digestibility and Predicted Glycaemic Index of Crisps and Chips from Nyandarua County, Kenya

This study investigates the effects of variety and processing method on the levels of TPC, dry matter, RDS, SDS, RS and GI in chips and crisps prepared from 3 potato varieties and recommends reduced consumption of chips prepared from Shangi in favour of Dera mwana variety which has better potential for glycemic control.

Comparative Effect of 22 Dietary Sources of Fiber on Gut Microbiota of Healthy Humans in vitro

Investigating in vitro the short-term effect of 22 commercially available food sources of dietary fiber on gut microbiota activity and specific composition of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, bifidobacteria, and lactobacilli populations finds that all the whole grain cereals had a similar effect on Gut microbiota modulation, inducing acetate and butyrate production and increasing bifIDobacteria levels.

Non-starch polysaccharides in beer and brewing: A review of their occurrence and significance.

It has become apparent that beer (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) contains appreciable amounts of non-starch polysaccharides, a broad subgroup of dietary fiber. It is worth noting that the

Extraction and Characterization of Fiber and Cellulose from Ethiopian Linseed Straw: Determination of Retting Period and Optimization of Multi-Step Alkaline Peroxide Process

Flax is a commercial crop grown in many parts of the world both for its seeds and for its fibers. The seed-based flax variety (linseed) is considered less for its fiber after the seed is extracted.

The effect of malting on phenolic compounds and radical scavenging activity in grains and breakfast cereals

Abstract Breakfast cereals are popular grain foods and sources of polyphenols. Malting alters polyphenol content and activity; however, effects are varied. The total polyphenol content (TPC), radical

Dietary fat and low fiber in purified diets differently impact the gut-liver axis to promote obesity-linked metabolic impairments.

Different and overlapping gut microbiome and metabolic impairments caused by low fiber or high-fat contents in HF-fed animals are identified, revealing their selective mechanisms underpinning the gastrointestinal and metabolic impacts in obesity.
