Rapid progress has been made in observations of the temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). These observations have enabled cosmologists to characterize the state of the universe at recombination, and observational efforts are now being directed towards obtaining the polarization map of the CMB. Here we draw an analogy between the CMB polarization map and nematic liquid crystals, pointing out that the two have similar defects. Making use of known results in the theory…

Topological Defects in Gravitational Lensing Shear Fields
Shear fields due to weak gravitational lensing have characteristic coherent patterns. We describe the topological defects in shear fields in terms of the curvature of the surface described by the

TLDR
Polarization singularities are shown to emerge spontaneously from the incoherent addition of uncorrelated optical fields that individually need not contain singularities, to make predictions about the singularities of the polarized component of the cosmic microwave background.
A novel approach to topological defects in a vector order parameter system
Based on Duan's topological current theory, we propose a novel approach to study the topological properties of topological defects in a two-dimensional complex vector order parameter system. This
