We report the case of a 21‐year‐old man with idiopathic generalized epilepsy who ingested about 8,000 mg of topiramate (TPM) in a suicide attempt. On admission to the hospital he had a nonconvulsive status epilepticus and received 4 mg lorazepam i.v. He recovered rapidly despite an initial TPM concentration of 144.6 μg/ml. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient who survived such a high TPM concentration. The case indicates that nonconvulsive status epilepticus could be a… Expand
Iatrogenic topiramate poisoning in an ICU patient: Focus on topiramate peak time prolongation
TLDR
A 35-year-old man with generalized insults was admitted to the intensive care unit because of third-line treatment of persistent epileptic insults with antiepileptic drug therapy and toxicokinetic assessment showed toxic serum topiramate concentration of 55 mg/L and a dose-dependent shift of peak time tmax. Expand
Levetiracetam and topiramate poisoning: Two overdoses on those drugs with no lasting effects.
TLDR
The case of a 21-year-old female who overdosed twice on levetiracetam and topiramate, where the woman was admitted and discharged after the first overdose and went home after the incident with no complications at all. Expand
Topiramate-induced confusion following a single ingestion of 400 mg.
TLDR
Clinicians should consider topiramate toxicity in their differential diagnosis for patients with neurological diseases presenting with acute-onset confusion and metabolic acidosis following the ingestion of two 200 mg tablets, which she was prescribed for the treatment of migraines. Expand
BENEFIT OF TOPIRAMATE IN THE TREATMENT OF SYMPTOMS OF BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER: A TYPICAL REVIEW
TLDR
A critical review of the pharmacokinetic interactions of topiramate with old and new AEDs, an oral contraceptive, and the CNS-active drugs lithium, haloperidol, amitriptyline, risperidone, sumatriptan, propranolol and dihydroergotamine is provided. Expand
Topiramate as an Adjunctive Treatment in Patients with Refractory Status Epilepticus
TLDR
Treatment with enterally administered topiramate was feasible, well tolerated and had a good safety profile in patients with RSE in this observational, single-centre, cohort study. Expand
Electroencephalographic criteria for nonconvulsive status epilepticus: Synopsis and comprehensive survey
TLDR
This compendium of patterns by NCSE syndrome classification with illustration of EEGs, and delineation of electroencephalographic features helps define the characteristics and semiologic borderlines among the types of NCSE. Expand
Vague effects of chronic topiramate administration on maximal electroshock-induced seizures in mice.
TLDR
Maximal electroshock in mice does not seem to be an appropriate seizure model to test anticonvulsant effects of chronic topiramate, and there were no significant differences between plasma and brain concentrations ofTopiramate after its acute and chronic administration. Expand
7 - Antiepileptic drugs
TLDR
This review of the 2010 publications on antiepileptic drugs, with information obtained from observational studies, double-blind studies, case reports, and epidemiological studies, covers carbamazepine, felbamate, gabapentin, lacosamide, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and retigabine, and their potential role in the pathogenesis of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy. Expand
An Updated Overview on Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Recent Antiepileptic Drugs
Given the distinctive characteristics of both epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) can make a significant contribution to the field of epilepsy. The measurementExpand
