AIMS To assess the efficacy of topiramate in treating cocaine use disorder (i.e. retention, efficacy, safety and craving reduction) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We searched six scientific databases from inception to 23 December 2014 with no date limits. Data were reviewed, extracted and analysed systematically. Studies were included if they were peer-reviewed randomized control trials with participants meeting diagnostic criteria for cocaine dependence or cocaine use…

Pharmacotherapy for Cocaine Use Disorder—a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
TLDR
Most of the pharmacotherapies studied were not effective for treating cocaine use disorder, but bupropion, psychostimulants, and topiramate may improve abstinence, and antipsychotics may improve retention.
Pharmacotherapy for Cocaine Use Disorder—a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Efficacy and safety of topiramate in binge eating disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis
TLDR
Preliminary findings support a possible efficacy of topiramate for the treatment of BED, even if safety concerns could limit the practical use of this treatment in BED subjects.
Prescription psychostimulants for the treatment of stimulant use disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis
TLDR
Prescription psychostimulants, particularly prescription amphetamines given in robust doses, have a clinically significant beneficial effect to promote abstinence in the treatment of individuals with PSUD, specifically the population with cocaine use disorder.
A Novel Therapy for cocaine dependence during abstinence: A randomized clinical trial
TLDR
The results showed that all three types of treatment played a significant efficacy in reducing the craving and can be helpful in planning supplementary remedial procedures.
A meta-analysis of cocaine use disorder treatment effectiveness
TLDR
This meta-analysis is unique in its broad inclusivity of treatment types and trial designs over a two-decade period of investigation and convergence with focused meta-analyses on treatments for cocaine use disorders.
Predictors of Topiramate Tolerability in Heavy Cannabis–Using Adolescents and Young Adults: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial
TLDR
Associations between clinical characteristics and side effects and dropout among adolescents and young adults randomized to topiramate are investigated to identify who may most benefit from and tolerate this medication and positive outcomes may be enhanced.
Topiramate for the Treatment of Dually Dependent on Opiates and Cocaine: A Single-center Placebo-controlled Trial
TLDR
The efficacy of topiramate in cocaine treatment is limited and needs the similar controlled clinical trials and can be used as a complementary intervention.
Use of Topiramate in the Spectrum of Addictive and Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review Comparing Treatment Schemes, Efficacy, and Safety Features
TLDR
Though off-label, addiction specialists should consider topiramate as a second-line option for drinking reduction in alcohol use disorder, as well as for binge eating disorder or cocaine use disorder.
Treatment of stimulant use disorder: A systematic review of reviews
TLDR
There was sufficient evidence to support the efficacy of contingency management programs for treatment of stimulant use disorder, but psychostimulants, n-acetylcysteine, opioid agonist therapy, disulfiram and antidepressant pharmacological interventions were found to have insufficient evidence tosupport or discount their use.

Topiramate for the treatment of cocaine addiction: a randomized clinical trial.
TLDR
Topiramate is more efficacious than placebo at increasing the mean weekly proportion of cocaine nonuse days and associated measures of clinical improvement among cocaine-dependent individuals.
Topiramate for the treatment of methamphetamine addiction: a multi-center placebo-controlled trial.
TLDR
Topiramate does not appear to promote abstinence in methamphetamine users but can reduce the amount taken and reduce relapse rates in those who are already abstinent.
Topiramate for treating alcohol dependence: a randomized controlled trial.
TLDR
Topiramate is a promising treatment for alcohol dependence and can improve drinking outcomes among alcohol-dependent individuals by reducing alcohol's reinforcing effects through facilitation of gamma-aminobutyric acid function and inhibition of glutaminergic pathways in the corticomesolimbic system.
Craving decrease with topiramate in outpatient treatment for cocaine dependence: an open label trial.
TLDR
More randomized placebo-controlled trials with topiramate for cocaine dependants should be performed to evaluate preliminary evidence.
Topiramate in the treatment of substance-related disorders: a critical review of the literature.
TLDR
Topiramate is efficacious for the treatment of alcohol dependence, but side effects may limit widespread use and heterogeneity both across and within these disorders limits topiramate's broad applicability in treating substance-related disorders.
Psychosocial interventions for cocaine and psychostimulant amphetamines related disorders.
TLDR
There are no data supporting a single treatment approach that is able to comprise the multidimensional facets of addiction patterns and to significantly yield better outcomes to resolve the chronic, relapsing nature of addiction, with all its correlates and consequences.
Topiramate for cocaine dependence during methadone maintenance treatment: a randomized controlled trial.
Treatment of alcohol dependence with low-dose topiramate: an open-label controlled study
TLDR
Low-dose topiramate as an adjunct to psychotherapeutic treatment is well tolerated and effective in reducing alcohol craving, as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety, present during the early phase of alcohol withdrawal.
