Manuka tree is indigenous to New Zealand, and its essential oil has been used as a traditional medicine to treat wounds, fever, and pain. Although there is a growing interest in the use of manuka oil for antiaging skin care products, little is known about its bioactivity. Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the primary environmental factor causing skin damage and consequently premature aging. Therefore, we evaluated manuka oil for its effects against photoaging in UV-B-irradiated hairless miceโ€ฆย Expand

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, known to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) excessively and elicit inflammatory response, is a potent inducer for skin photoaging. Overproduction of ROS inโ€ฆ Expand
The protective effect of 18ฮฒ-Glycyrrhetinic acid against UV irradiation induced photoaging in mice
TLDR
Results showed that GA pretreatment significantly alleviated the macroscopic and histopathological damages in mice skin caused by UV, and observably attenuates UV-induced skin photoaging mainly by virtue of its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Expand
Antiaging effect of Curcuma longa L. essential oil on ultraviolet-irradiated skin
Abstract Objective Essential oil derived from the rhizome of Curcumin longa (CL-EO) has marked anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antiviral activities. However, its effectโ€ฆ Expand

Ameliorative effects of snake (Deinagkistrodon acutus) oil and its main fatty acids against UVB-induced skin photodamage in mice.
TLDR
This study demonstrated for the first time in KM mice that snake oil exhibited prominent photoprotection activity by protecting the activity of antioxidant enzymes and inhibiting inflammatory factors, as well as reducing the generation of MMP-1. Expand
Chemical Composition and Skin Protective Effects of Essential Oil Obtained from Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe)
TLDR
GEO treatment at three different concentrations ameliorated UVB-induced skin inflammation and inhibited interleukin-1ฮฒ and tumour necrosis factor-ฮฑ expression in skin tissues, therefore, GEO adequately protected the skin from UVB irradiation and photoaging. Expand

TLDR
Application of AO improved the condition of UVโ€B radiationโ€induced damaged skin, and the mechanism of action was found to be related to inhibition of the production of inflammatory cytokines. Expand
Mฤnuka Oilโ€”A Review of Antimicrobial and Other Medicinal Properties
TLDR
The present review found extensive in vitro data supporting the antimicrobial effects of mฤnuka oil warrants further clinical studies to establish its therapeutic potential and clinical evidence on its efficacy, safety and dosing guidelines are necessary for its implementation for medical purposes. Augmentation of UV-induced skin wrinkling by infrared irradiation in hairless mice
TLDR
It is demonstrated that IR alone induces skin wrinkling and augments UV-induced wrinkle formation, and suggests that IR plays an important role in the development of photoaging. Expand

Multiple exposures to ultraviolet irradiation lead to sustained elevations of matrix metalloproteinases that degrade skin collagen and may contribute to photoaging. Expand
Molecular basis of sun-induced premature skin ageing and retinoid antagonism
TLDR
It is proposed that elevated metalloprotein-ases, resulting from activation of AP-1 and NF-KB by low-dose solar irradiation, degrade collagen and elastin in skin, which would result in solar scars, which through accumulation from a lifetime of repeated low- dose sunlight exposure could cause premature skin ageing (photoageing).
