Carica papaya L. seeds extracted with 80% ethanol (EEPS) caused concentration-dependent tocolysis of uterine strips isolated from gravid and non-gravid rats. Prostaglandin F2alpha and oxytocin-induced contractions of the isolated rat uterus were also inhibited in a concentration-dependent fashion by EEPS. Recoveries of the uterine activity after EEPS-induced uterine quiescence were very weak. Higher concentration of EEPS caused prompt uterine quiescence, which was also significantly… Expand
PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PEGANUM HARMALA SEEDS EXTRACT ON ISOLATED RAT UTERUS
The effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Peganum harmala seeds (EPS) on spontaneous rhythmic contractions of isolated rat uterine was investigated in this study. EPS was tested on the isolated uterusExpand
Modulation of Jejunal Contractions by Extract of Carica papaya L. Seeds
TLDR
The results indicate that papaya seed extract and BITC, its principal bioactive constituent are capable of weakening the contractile capability of rabbit isolated jejunum. Expand
Uterotonic activity of Heimia salicifolia leaves
TLDR
Heimia salicifolia showed oxytoxic activity and explain their use in traditional medicine as abortifacient in Mexico by demonstrating uterotonic effect and inhibition with indomethacin. Expand
Carica papaya (Paw-Paw) unripe fruit may be beneficial in ulcer.
TLDR
Oral administration of AE and ME up to 5,000 mg/kg did not produce lethality or signs of acute toxicity in mice after 24 hours and may account for the anti-ulcer property of the unripe fruit. Expand
The Aqueous Methanolic Extract of Unripe Carica Papaya ( Pawpaw ) Fruit Distrupts Oestrous Cycle in Albino Rats
This study investigated the effects of aqueous methanolic extract of unripe Carica papaya (AMEUCP) on cyclicity of female rats. Fresh mature unripe pawpaw fruits were obtained from Nsukka, NigeriaExpand
Effect of fermented seed extract of Carica papaya on litters of female wistar rats ( Rattus norvegicus )
TLDR
It is shown that the fermented seeds of C. papaya seeds does not affect the litters and may be safe as a food condiment. Expand
Effect of fermented and unfermented seed extracts of Carica papaya on pre-implantation embryo development in female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus)
TLDR
The unfermented seed extract of C. papaya at 1500 mg/kg resulted in higher pre-implantation losses, thus indicating its contraceptive ability, while the fermented extract did not have such effect and may be safe as a food condiment. Expand
COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON ANT HELMINTIC POTENTIAL OF CUCURBITA MAXIMA (PUMPKIN) SEEDS AND CARICA PAPAYA (PAPAYA) SEEDS
TLDR
The comparative study showed that Carica papaya proves to be a better anthelmintic remedy than Cucurbita maxima out of the two, because it possesses more wormicidal activity. Expand
Administration Dependent Antioxidant Effect of Carica papaya Seeds Water Extract
TLDR
C. papaya seeds water extract is potentially useful for protection against oxidative stress and acts as a potent free radical scavenger, providing protection to Detroit 550 fibroblasts that underwent H2O2 oxidative stress. Expand
The Candida albicans Inhibitory Activity of the Extract from Papaya (Carica papaya L.) Seed Relates to Mitochondria Dysfunction
TLDR
The GC-MS analysis demonstrated that the PSE represents a rich and high-purity source of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), which indicated the BITC may be responsible for the mitochondrial dysfunction. Expand

Effects of papaya seed extract and benzyl isothiocyanate on vascular contraction.
TLDR
It is concluded that these extracts, when present in high concentration, are cytotoxic by increasing the membrane permeability to Ca2+, and that the vascular effects of papaya seed extracts are consistent with the notion that BITC is the chief bio-active ingredient. Expand
Human sperm immobilization effect of Carica papaya seed extracts: an in vitro study.
TLDR
The results reveal spermicidal activity in vitro of the seed extracts of Carica papaya, which showed antispermatogenic/sperm immobilization properties in animal models, could cause human sperm immobilization in vitro. Expand
Effect of papaya seed extract on contractile response of cauda epididymal tubules.
TLDR
Papaya seed treatment reversibly reduces the contractile response of cauda epididymal tubules and after three months of papaya withdrawal, a nearly normal pattern of contraction was regained. Expand
Studies on antifertility effect of pawpaw seeds (Carica papaya) on the gonads of male albino rats
TLDR
Preliminary studies on the antifertility effect of pawpaw seeds (Carica papaya) on the gonads of male albino (Wistar) rats was investigated and there was disorganization in some of the seminiferous tubules while others appeared normal. Expand

Benzyl isothiocyanate is the chief or sole anthelmintic in papaya seed extracts.
TLDR
The results are best explained if benzyl isothiocyanate is the predominant or sole anthelmintic agent in papaya seed extracts regardless of how seeds are extracted. Expand
Investigation of the tuber constituents of maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.).

Subacute oral toxicity study of benzyl isothiocyanate in rats.
The subacute toxicity of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) was investigated in male rats given oral doses of 0, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Body weight gain and food consumptionExpand
Cytomorphological changes in liver cells exposed to allyl and benzyl isothiocyanate and their cysteine and glutathione conjugates
TLDR
The cellular symptoms suggest that the primary target of isothiocyanates is in the plasma membrane and the cellular membrane system, affecting the monovalent cation and water balance of the cell organelles rather than the Ca2+ homeostasis as in cells exposed to tert-butylhydroperoxide. Expand
Glutathione- and cysteine-mediated cytotoxicity of allyl and benzyl isothiocyanate.
TLDR
Glutathione and cysteine can be regarded as transporting agents for the isothiocyanates through the body, thus excess L-cysteine diminishes cytotoxicity, since less free isotho is present outside the cells, but does not completely protect the cells. Expand
