Carboxyfluorescein, a symplastic probe, was applied to the cut mesocotyl base or coleoptile apex of etiolated Zea mays cv. Silver Queen seedlings and its transport measured and tissue distribution determined. Long-distance longitudinal symplastic transport of the carboxyfluorescein was mainly in the vascular stele.
