Although traditionally recognized for maintaining extracellular matrix integrity during morphogenesis, the function of matrix metallo-proteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors, the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), in the mature nervous system is essentially unknown.
