}Genes belonging to both HoxA and HoxD clusters are required for proper vertebrate limb development. Mice lacking all, or parts of, Hoxa and Hoxd functions in forelimbs, as well as mice with a gain of function of these genes in the early limb bud, have helped us to understand functional and regulatory issues associated with these genes, such that, for example, the tight mechanistic interdependency that exists between the production of the limb and its anterior to posterior (AP) polarity. Selection on Phalanx Development in the Evolution of the Bird Wing
- BiologyMolecular biology and evolution
- 2021
It is suggested that the phenotype of the Archaeopteryx lithographica wing is also consistent with phalanx loss, and the results support a gradualist model of evolution based on tinkering with developmental gene expression.

Jellyfish genomes reveal distinct homeobox gene clusters and conservation of small RNA processing
- BiologyNature Communications

Jellyfish genomes reveal a mosaic of conserved and divergent genomic characters evolved from a shared ancestral genetic architecture, and evidence for tissue-specific microRNA arm switching as found in Bilateria is detected.

A Dual Role for Hox Genes in Limb Anterior-Posterior Asymmetry
- BiologyScience
- 2004
It is concluded that early posterior restriction of Hox gene products sets up an anterior-posterior prepattern, which determines the localized activation of Shh, and this signal is subsequently translated into digit morphological asymmetry by promoting the late expression ofHoxd genes.
Hoxa-13 and Hoxd-13 play a crucial role in the patterning of the limb autopod.
- BiologyDevelopment
- 1996
It is reported here that targeted disruption of the Hoxa-13 gene leads to a specific forelimb and hindlimb autopodal phenotype, distinct from that of theHoxd-13 paralogous gene inactivation, indicating that these genes act in a partially redundant manner.

Early developmental arrest of mammalian limbs lacking HoxA/HoxD gene function
- BiologyNature
- 2005
It is shown that mice that are lacking all Hoxa and Hoxd functions in their forelimbs are arrested early in their developmental patterning and display severe truncations of distal elements, partly owing to the absence of Sonic hedgehog expression.
Analysis of Hox gene expression in the chick limb bud.
- BiologyDevelopment
- 1996
Comparison of the distributions of Hoxc-6 RNA and protein products reveals posttranscriptional regulation of this gene, suggesting that caution must be exercised in interpreting the functional significance of the RNA distribution of any of the vertebrate Hox genes.
Manifestation of the limb prepattern: limb development in the absence of sonic hedgehog function.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 2001
According to this model, the limb bud signaling centers, including the zone of polarizing activity (ZPA) acting through Shh, are required to elaborate upon the axial information provided by the native limb field prepattern to form autopodial structures in the mutant.
Serial deletions and duplications suggest a mechanism for the collinearity of Hoxd genes in limbs
- BiologyNature
- 2002
These results demonstrate why genes located at the extremity of the cluster are expressed at the distal end of the limbs, following a gradual reduction in transcriptional efficiency, and thus highlight the mechanistic nature of collinearity in limbs.
Absence of radius and ulna in mice lacking hoxa-11 andhoxd-11

Double mutants are generated which have dramatic phenotypes not apparent in mice homozygous for the individual mutations, and suggest that paralogous Hoxgenes function together to specify limb outgrowth and patterning along the proximodistal axis.
Coordinate expression of the murine Hox-5 complex homoeobox-containing genes during limb pattern formation

Comparison of the expression patterns of the genes of Hox complexes in the early embryo suggests that similar molecular mechanisms are involved in the positional signalling along the axes of both the embryonic trunk and the fetal limbs.
Hox C cluster genes are dispensable for overall body plan of mouse embryonic development.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 2000
The development of mutant pups shows that the Hox C genes are dispensable for the overall body plan of mouse embryogenesis and provides further evidence that at least some genes within a cluster exhibit interaction functions with each other.
