Thioether molecular rotors show great promise as nanoscale models for exploring the fundamental limits of thermally and electrically driven molecular rotation. By using time-resolved measurements which increase the time resolution of the scanning tunneling microscope we were able to record the dynamics of individual thioether molecular rotors as a function of surface structure, rotor chemistry, thermal energy and electrical excitation. Our results demonstrate that the local surface structure…
Controlling Molecular Switching via Chemical Functionality: Ethyl vs Methoxy Rotors
Surface-bound molecular rotors provide a useful way to study the structure and dynamics of molecular motion at the single-molecule level. However, when most molecules adsorb on a metal surface, their

STM STUDIES ON MOLECULAR ROTORS AND MOTORS
TLDR
This review addresses recent advances in the STM studies of the structure, motion, and manipulation of molecular rotors and motors by addressing the developments of surface-mounted azimuthal and altitudinal rotor and motors, large-scale array of molecular Rotors, as well as the molecular motors with translational motion.
Development of an electrically driven molecular motor.
TLDR
This work pioneered the use of a new, stable and tunable molecular rotor system based on surface-bound thioethers to comprehensively study many aspects of molecular rotation and culminated in the first experimental demonstration of a single-molecule electric motor.
Ullmann coupling mediated assembly of an electrically driven altitudinal molecular rotor.
TLDR
An extensive set of inelastic electron tunneling driven rotation experiments reveal that torsional motion around the ethyl group is stimulated by tunneling electrons in a one-electron process with an excitation energy threshold of 45 meV, offering an ideal platform for examining many fundamental aspects of the dynamics of chemically tunable molecular rotor and motors.
Topological dynamics in supramolecular rotors.
TLDR
This work exemplifies the role of noncovalent interactions and transient rearrangements in the complex behavior of supramolecular rotors caged in a 2D metal-organic coordination network and reveals that stereoisomerization of the chiral trimeric units entails topological isomerization whereas rotation occurs in a topology conserving, two-step asynchronous process.
Artificial molecular rotors and motors on surfaces: STM reveals and triggers
TLDR
This review addresses recent advances in revealing the structure, motion, and manipulation of molecular rotors and motors on a surface by scanning tunnelling microscopy.
Experimental demonstration of a single-molecule electric motor.
TLDR
It is reported that a butyl methyl sulphide molecule adsorbed on a copper surface can be operated as a single-molecule electric motor using Electrons from a scanning tunnelling microscope to drive the directional motion of the molecule in a two-terminal setup.
Surface single-molecule dynamics controlled by entropy at low temperatures
TLDR
Using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) to measure an individual dibutyl sulfide molecule on Au(111), it is shown that the differences arise when the relative position of tip apex and molecule changes by a fraction of the molecule size.
Electron-induced dynamics of heptathioether β-cyclodextrin molecules.
TLDR
The dynamics are temperature independent, but increase with increasing tunneling current and sample bias, thus indicating that the conformational changes of the β-CD molecules are induced by electrons that tunnel inelastically.
