Micromachined ultrasonic transducer (MUT) arrays are topical because, among other opportunities, they may supplant piezoelectric arrays in ultrasound medical imaging. However, imaging system companies need to explore performance and design issues thoroughly before making a serious commitment to these silicon-based electrostatic devices.
