In this work we investigate cosmologies where the gravitational constant varies in time, with the aim of explaining the accelerated expansion without a cosmological constant. We achieve this by considering a phenomenological extension to general relativity, modifying Einstein's field equations such that $G$ is a function of time, $G(t)$, and we preserve the geometrical consistency (Bianchi identity) together with the usual conservation of energy by introducing a new tensor field to the…

Can Dark Energy Emerge from a Varying G and Spacetime Geometry?

The accelerated expansion of the universe implies the existence of an energy contribution known as dark energy. Associated with the cosmological constant in the standard model of cosmology, the

A Study in the Variation of G

There are indications that the Newtonian gravitational constant may not be a constant but may vary with respect to some other physical parameter. Various possible characterizations of Newton’s

Can varying the gravitational constant alleviate the tensions?

Constraints on the cosmological concordance model parameters from observables at different redshifts are usually obtained using the locally measured value of the gravitational constant GN . Here we

Cosmological constraints on the gravitational constant

We study the variation of the gravitational constant on cosmological scales in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We focus on the simplest models of scalar-tensor theories with a coupling to the

Estimates of the change rate of solar mass and gravitational constant based on the dynamics of the Solar System

The estimate of the change rate of the solar gravitational parameter d(GM⊙)∕dt is obtained from processing modern positional observations of planets and spacecraft. Observations were processed and

The minimally extended Varying Speed of Light (meVSL)

Even though there have been various models of the time-varying speed of light (VSL), they remain out of the mainstream because of their possible violation of physics laws built into fundamental

Hints of a local matter underdensity or modified gravity in the low z Pantheon data

A redshift tomography of the Pantheon type Ia supernovae (SnIa) data focusing on the best fit value of the absolute magnitude $M$ and/or Hubble constant $H_0$ in the context of $\Lambda$CDM indicates

Gravity in the era of equality: Towards solutions to the Hubble problem without fine-tuned initial conditions

Discrepant measurements of the Universe's expansion rate ($H_0$) may signal physics beyond the standard cosmological model. Here I describe two early modified gravity mechanisms that reconcile the

Property of theories for the variation of gravitation and fine structure ‘constants’ are reviewed with reference to recent quasar data that are consistent with time variation in the fine structure constant since a redshift of 3.5.

Type Ia supernovae

At its heart, a Type Ia supernova is a problem in turbulent nuclear combustion. There are four sub-problems, each of which has eluded solution for decades, but which can be addressed by large scale

Brans–Dicke Gravity with a Cosmological Constant Smoothes Out ΛCDM Tensions

We analyze Brans–Dicke gravity with a cosmological constant, Λ, and cold dark matter (BD-ΛCDM) in the light of the latest cosmological observations on distant supernovae, Hubble rate measurements at

Tensions between the early and late Universe

A Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics workshop in July 2019 directed attention to the Hubble constant discrepancy. New results showed that it does not appear to depend on the use of any one

Screened fifth forces mediated by dark matter-baryon interactions: Theory and astrophysical probes

We derive the details of a new screening mechanism where the interactions of baryons and dark matter can be screened according to the local dark matter density. In this mechanism, the value of

Limitations on Standard Sirens tests of gravity from screening

Modified gravity theories with an effective Newton constant that varies over cosmological timescales generally predict a different gravitational wave luminosity distance than General Relativity.

The Cosmological Constant Problem

Astronomical observations indicate that the cosmological constant is many orders of magnitude smaller than estimated in modern theories of elementary particles. After a brief review of the history of
