We study the tidal excitation of gravity modes (g-modes) in compact white dwarf binary systems with periods ranging from minutes to hours. As the orbit of the system decays via gravitational radiation, the orbital frequency increases and sweeps through a series of resonances with the g-modes of the white dwarf. At each resonance, the tidal force excites the g-mode to a relatively large amplitude, transferring the orbital energy to the stellar oscillation. We calculate the eigenfrequencies of g… Expand

Dynamical tides in eccentric binaries and tidally excited stellar pulsations in Kepler KOI-54
Recent observation of the tidally excited stellar oscillations in the main-sequence binary KOI-54 by the Kepler satellite provides a unique opportunity for studying dynamical tides in eccentricExpand
Dynamical tides in compact white dwarf binaries: tidal synchronization and dissipation
In compact white dwarf (WD) binary systems (with periods ranging from minutes to hours), dynamical tides involving the excitation and dissipation of gravity waves play a dominant role in determiningExpand
Polygram Stars: Resonant Tidal Excitation of Fundamental Oscillation Modes in Asynchronous Stellar Coalescence
The prevalence of binary stars at close separations implies that many of these systems will interact or merge during the binary's lifetime. This paper presents hydrodynamic simulations of theExpand
Tidal resonance locks in inspiraling white dwarf binaries
We calculate the tidal response of helium and carbon/oxygen (C/O) white dwarf (WD) binaries inspiraling due to gravitational wave emission. We show that resonance locks, previously considered inExpand
Dynamical resonance locking in tidally interacting binary systems
We examine the dynamics of resonance locking in detached, tidally interacting binary systems. In a resonance lock, a given stellar or planetary mode is trapped in a highly resonant state for anExpand
Dynamical tides in compact white dwarf binaries: influence of rotation
Tidal interactions play an important role in the evolution and ultimate fate of compact white dwarf (WD) binaries. Not only do tides affect the pre-merger state (such as temperature and rotationExpand
Inverse tides in pulsating binary stars
In close binary stars, the tidal excitation of pulsations typically dissipates energy, causing the system to evolve towards a circular orbit with aligned and synchronized stellar spins. However, forExpand
Dynamical Tides in Compact White Dwarf Binaries: Helium Core White Dwarfs, Tidal Heating, and Observational Signatures
Tidal dissipation in compact white dwarf (WD) binary systems signicantly inuences the physical conditions (such as surface temperature and rotation rate) of the WDs prior to mass transfer or merger.Expand
Tidal circularization of gaseous planets orbiting white dwarfs
A gas giant planet which survives the giant branch stages of evolution at a distance of many au and then is subsequently perturbed sufficiently close to a white dwarf will experience orbitalExpand
Tidal effects in eccentric coalescing neutron star binaries
Dynamically formed compact object binaries may still be eccentric while in the LIGO/Virgo band. For a neutron star (NS) in an eccentric binary, the fundamental modes (f-modes) are excited atExpand

Resonant excitation of white dwarf oscillations in compact object binaries – I. The no back reaction approximation
We consider the evolution of white dwarfs with compact object companions (specifically black holes with masses up to ∼10^6 M_⊙, neutron stars, and other white dwarfs). We suppose that the orbits areExpand
Energy Dissipation Through Quasi-static Tides in White Dwarf Binaries
We present a formalism to study tidal interactions in white dwarf binaries in the limiting case of quasi-static tides, in which the tidal forcing frequencies are small compared to the inverse of theExpand
Resonant Oscillations and Tidal Heating in Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars
Tidal interaction in a coalescing neutron star binary can resonantly excite the g-mode oscillations of the neutron star when the frequency of the tidal driving force equals the intrinsic g-modeExpand
Excitation of neutron star normal modes during binary inspiral
As a compact binary inspirals due to the emission of gravitational waves, its orbital period decreases continuously down to approximately 1 ms, its value at coalescence. During the last part of theExpand
Resonant tidal excitations of inertial modes in coalescing neutron star binaries
We study the effect of resonant tidal excitation of inertial modes in neutron stars during binary inspiral. For spin frequencies less than 100 Hz, the phase shift in the gravitational waveformExpand
Resonant tidal excitations of rotating neutron stars in coalescing binaries
In a coalescing neutron star–neutron star or neutron star–black hole binary, oscillation modes of the neutron star can be resonantly excited by the companion during the final minutes of the binaryExpand
TIDAL DISSIPATION IN ROTATING SOLAR-TYPE STARS
We calculate the excitation and dissipation of low-frequency tidal oscillations in uniformly rotating solar-type stars. For tidal frequencies smaller than twice the spin frequency, inertial waves areExpand
Nonlinear Damping of Oscillations in Tidal-Capture Binaries
We calculate the damping of quadrupole f and low order g modes (primary modes) by nonlinear coupling to other modes of the star. This damping is orders of magnitude more rapid than direct radiativeExpand
Gravitomagnetic resonant excitation of Rossby modes in coalescing neutron star binaries
In coalescing neutron star binaries, r-modes in one of the stars can be resonantly excited by the gravitomagnetic tidal field of its companion. This post-Newtonian gravitomagnetic driving of theseExpand
