We present the first attempt at measuring the production rate of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) and estimating their contribution to the overall dwarf population. Using HST/ACS deep imaging data from GOODS and GEMS surveys in conjunction with photometric redshifts from COMBO-17 survey, we performed a morphological analysis for a sample of merging/interacting galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and identified tidal dwarf candidates in the rest-frame optical bands. We estimated a…
Long tidal tails in merging galaxies and their implications
We investigate the properties of long tidal tails using the largest to date sample of 461 merging galaxies with log(M * /M) ≥ 9.5 within 0.2 ≤ z ≤ 1 from the COSMOS survey in combination with Hubble
Merging Galaxies with Tidal Tails in COSMOS to z=1
Tidal tails are created in major mergers involving disk galaxies. How the tidal tails trace the assembly history of massive galaxies remains to be explored. We identify a sample of 461 merging
Does the dwarf galaxy system of the Milky Way originate from Andromeda
The Local Group is often seen to be a quiescent environment without significant merger events. However, an ancient major merger may have occurred in the most massive galaxy as suggested by the M31
Refuelled and shielded – the early evolution of tidal dwarf galaxies
We present, for the first time, numerical simulations of young tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs), including a self-consistent treatment of the tidal arm in which they are embedded. Thereby, we do not rely

Tidal dwarf candidates in a sample of interacting galaxies
We present deep opticalB,V,R images of a sample of 10 interacting systems which were selected for their resem- blance to disturbed galaxies at high redshift. Photometry is per- formed on knots in the
From tidal dwarf galaxies to satellite galaxies
Received; accepted Abstract. The current popular cosmological models have granted to the population of dwarf satellite galaxies a key role: their number, location and masses constrain both the
Resolved Galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Star Formation in Disks at High Redshift
The photometric redshift distributions, spectral types, Sersic indices, and sizes of all resolved galaxies in the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra Deep Field (UDF) are studied in order to understand the
The optical and near-infrared properties of galaxies. I. Luminosity and stellar mass functions
We use a large sample of galaxies from the Two Micron All Sky Survey(2MASS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to calculate galaxy luminosity and stellar mass functions in the local Universe. We
Star-Formation Histories, Abundances, and Kinematics of Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group
Within the Local Universe galaxies can be studied in great detail star by star, and here we review the results of quantitative studies in nearby dwarf galaxies. The color-magnitude diagram synthesis
We present the results from our program to determine the evolution of the galaxy interaction/merger rate with redshift using the unique star-forming characteristics of collisional ring galaxies. We
Galaxy Merger Statistics and Inferred Bulge-to-Disk Ratios in Cosmological SPH Simulations
We construct merger trees for galaxies identified in a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation and use them to characterize predicted merger rates as a function of redshift, galaxy mass, and merger mass
We present observations and analysis of nine dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the M81 Group taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The nine galaxies (the
A Direct Measurement of Major Galaxy Mergers at z 3
This paper presents direct evidence for hierarchical galaxy assembly out to redshifts z ~ 3. We identify major mergers using the model-independent CAS (concentration, asymmetry, clumpiness) physical
Dry Mergers in GEMS: The Dynamical Evolution of Massive Early-Type Galaxies
We have used the 28' × 28' Hubble Space Telescope image mosaic from the GEMS (Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs) survey in conjunction with the COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey to
