Abstract Observations were employed to study the thermal characteristics of the Tibetan Plateau and its neighboring regions, and their impacts on the onset of the Asian monsoon in 1989. Special attention was paid to the diagnosis of the temporal and spatial distributions of surface sensible and latent heat fluxes. Results show that the whole procedure of the outbreak of the Asian monsoon onset is composed of three consequential stages. The first is the monsoon onset over the eastern coast of…

First Transition of the Asian Summer Monsoon in 1998 and the effect of the Tibet-Tropical Indian Ocean Thermal Contrast

The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) in 1998 first broke out over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) on May 15, then the South China Sea (SCS) on May 25, and South Asia (the Indian summer monsoon) around June 10.

Global climate effects of summer Tibetan Plateau

Recent Advances in the Study on the Dynamics of the Asian Summer Monsoon Onset

The surface wind can be a better indicator of the onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon(ASM) system than the 850-hPa wind. The use of the new ASM onset index and analysis of pentad-isochrones,based on

Onset of the summer monsoon over the Indochina Peninsula : Climatology and interannual variations

Abstract The temporal and spatial structures of the atmospheric circulation associated with the climatology and interannual variations of the summer monsoon onset over the Indochina Peninsula were

Effects of the Tibetan Plateau on the onsetof the summer monsoon in South Asia: The role of the air‐sea interaction

Using both a coupled atmosphere‐ocean general circulation model (GCM) and an atmospheric GCM, we investigate the effects of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the onset of the South Asian summer monsoon by

Onset and the evolution of the Summer Monsoon over the South China Sea during SCSMEX Field Experiment in 1998

The South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX), which was carried out from 1 May to 31 August 1998, is a multi-endeavor that is closely linked to and coordinated with activities of national weather

Characteristics of the onset of the Asian summer monsoon and the importance of Asian-Australian “land bridge”

Based on summarizing previous achievements and using data as long and new as possible, the onset characteristics of Asian summer monsoon and the role of Asian-Australian “land bridge” in the onset of

Effect of condensational heating over the Bay of Bengal on the onset of the South China Sea monsoon in 1998

SummaryIn this study, the authors analyse the observational features of the onset of the South China Sea (SCS) monsoon in 1998 shown in reanalysis data and use a numerical model to understand the

Quasi-Biweekly Oscillation over the Tibetan Plateau and Its Link with the Asian Summer Monsoon*

Abstract Intraseasonal variation (ISV) is especially prominent and unique in the Asian summer monsoon region. In this work, the dominant ISV mode over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in the summer monsoon

Boosting Effect of Tropical Cyclone “Fani” on the Onset of the South China Sea Summer Monsoon in 2019

The late onset of the South China Sea (SCS) summer monsoon (SCSSM) has traditionally been attributed to El Niño events. However, the SCSSM built up around Pentad 26 in 2019, which was 10 days earlier

Onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon in 1979 and the Effect of the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract The time evolution of the general circulation over Asia during an 80-day period from mid-April to early July 1979 is studied using objectively analyzed FGGE Level II-b data. Through the

Tropical Circulations Associated with Southwest Monsoon Onset and Westerly Surges over the South China Sea

Abstract The earliest onset of the Asian summer monsoon occurs in early to middle May over the South China Sea. This onset is signified by the development of low-level westerlies and leads to heavy

The Role of Mountains in the South Asian Monsoon Circulation

Abstract An 11–level numerical model of the atmospheric circulation which has a prescribed seasonal variation of insulation and sea surface temperatures is integrated with respect to time for

An Observational Study of the South China Sea Monsoon during the 1979 Summer: Onset and Life Cycle

Abstract The onset and life cycle of the 1979 South China Sea summer monsoon were examined in the context of the 30–60- and 12–24-day monsoon modes. The former intraseasonal mode formed the

The Atmospheric Heat Source over the Tibetan Plateau: May–August 1979

Abstract Estimates of the time and space variability of the atmospheric heat source over Tibet are presented for the summer of 1979. These estimates rely on new data from the People's Republic of

Abrupt change in the characteristics of the cloud zone in subtropical east Asia around the middle of May

An abrupt seasonal change in cloud features around the East Asian cloud band (EA-band) was found in the middle of May or late May in all the years of 1982 to 1987 by using two indexes derived from

Some Characteristics of the Summer Circulation Over the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau and Its Neighborhood

Horizontal and vertical circulation patterns over the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) plateau during summer, derived from meteorological observations, are compared with results from rotating annulus

Large-scale aspects of the "summer monsoon" in South and East Asia

In classical text-books of climatology the annual course of weather and climate is largely described by means of monthly averages and frequencies. In some areas of Japan this leads to considerable

Oscillations of a Monsoon System. Part I. Observational Aspects

Abstract In this paper the elements of a monsoon system are defined, and its oscillations are determined from spectral analysis of long observational records. The elements of the monsoon system

Cloudiness Fluctuations Associated with the Northern Hemisphere Summer Monsoon

The broad-scale fluctuations of cloudiness over the Eastern Hemisphere during the northern summer monsoon were investigated by using daily satellite mosaic pictures taken from June 1 to September 30,
