Thrombin, a serine protease generated at sites of vascular injury, plays a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and restenosis after angioplasty. Adherence of monocytes to the endothelium and migration into the subendothelial space is an important early event in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
