Paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) and paramethoxymetamphetamine (PMMA) are methoxylated phenylethylamine derivatives with effects similar to methylenedioxymetamphetamine (MDMA) and sold as such. However, PMA and PMMA are more potent than MDMA, but have a slower onset of action, which encourages users to take more. Three fatal cases involving PMA and PMMA in Denmark in year 2000 are investigated including history, pathological, and toxicological findings. The methods used for extraction… Expand
Recent paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) deaths in Taiwan.
TLDR
The case history and pathological and toxicological findings of eight recent PMMA-related fatalities were investigated and other drugs, such as MDA, MDMA, ketamine, norketamine, hydroxymidazolam, methamphetamine, and pentobarbital, were also found in these cases. Expand
Severe paramethoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) and paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) outbreak in Israel
TLDR
An outbreak of PMMA and PMA poisoning resulting in 24 fatalities, and the post mortem whole blood and urine concentrations of these two compounds, was reported, suggesting PMA was probably the result of PMA metabolism. Expand
Deaths from exposure to paramethoxymethamphetamine in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada: a case series.
TLDR
Exposure to PMMA was characterized by multiorgan dysfunction and serotonin syndrome, followed by cardiovascular collapse, and clinicians must anticipate multiple clinical effects from the increased release of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine and other neurotransmitters. Expand
The PMMA epidemic in Norway: comparison of fatal and non-fatal intoxications.
TLDR
All fatalities attributed to PMMA had high PMMA blood concentrations compared to non-fatal cases, and a public warning is warranted against use and overdose with illegal "ecstasy" or "speed" drugs. Expand
Para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA): A study of risk factors for fatal intoxication with emphasis on metabolite pattern and CYP genetics
TLDR
All fatalities attributed to PMMA had high PMMA blood concentrations compared to non-fatal cases, and a public warning is warranted against use and overdose with illegal ‘‘ecstasy’’ or “‘speed”’ drugs. Expand
Studies on distribution and metabolism of para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) in rats after subcutaneous administration.
TLDR
Study of the disposition and kinetic profile of PMMA and its metabolites in rat plasma and selected tissues after the bolus subcutaneous dose of 40mg/kg could be useful for subsequent evaluation of the psychotropic or neurotoxic effects of PM MA and for diagnostic concern of intoxication. Expand
The antemortem neurobehavior in fatal paramethoxymethamphetamine usage.
TLDR
Forensic autopsy showed variable findings, ranging from no remarkable change to significant pathological damage similar to serotonin syndrome in both groups of patients, and PMMA seems to enhance serotoninergism than dopaminergism, and exerts a concentration-related dual effect on human. Expand
Studies on distribution of para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) designer drug in rats using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
TLDR
The experimental results ascertained could be useful for subsequent evaluation of PMMA psychotropic or neurotoxic effects and the diagnostic concern of intoxication. Expand
Medicolegal aspects of PMA-related deaths.
TLDR
The cause of deaths was determined as overdoses of PMA with the underlying mechanism of acute cardiorespiratory failure, which generates problems that create ever-expanding research areas, including analytical, clinical and medicolegal issues, thus leading to development of systemic databases. Expand
Behavioral, hyperthermic and pharmacokinetic profile of para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) in rats
TLDR
The behavioral profile of PMMA, its hyperthermic potency and pharmacokinetic profile in rats indicate that PMMA has a similar behavioral profile to stimulants and hallucinogens and that the toxicity might be increased in a crowded environment. Expand

TLDR
Significant differences between heart and peripheral blood concentrations were observed in two of the three cases, which may indicate the potential for postmortem redistribution of PMA. Expand
Recent paramethoxyamphetamine deaths
Paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) is a methoxylated phenethylamine derivative that has been used illicitly in Australia since late 1994. It is purportedly sold under the guise of "ecstasy", which is theExpand
Recent paramethoxyamphetamine deaths.
TLDR
PMA appeared to be more toxic than MDMA, and blood levels greater than 0.5 mg/L seemed likely to be associated with toxic effects, according to toxicology findings in six fatalities involving the drug. Expand
Fatalities caused by the MDMA-related drug paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA).
TLDR
Three recent fatalities that occurred in the midwestern United States in which each of the decedents believed that they were ingesting MDMA were reported, and PMA is not a contaminant of MDMA, and no MDMA was found in any of these cases. Expand
Amphetamine derivative related deaths.
TLDR
The results of a systematic study of all cases of deaths brought to the attention of the Madrid department of the Instituto Nacional de Toxicologia from 1993 to 1995 in which some of these drugs have been found in the cadaveric blood are presented. Expand
Initial Characterization of PMMA as a Discriminative Stimulus1
TLDR
The results of these studies suggest that PMMA is an MDMA-like agent that lacks the amphetamine-like stimulant character of MDMA. Expand
Determination of amphetamine and methamphetamine in blood by derivatization with perfluorooctanoyl chloride and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
TLDR
A relatively simple method for quantitation of amphetamine and methamphetamine in blood was developed, and none of the drugs tested interfered, except for a substance in putrefied blood samples, which was found to interfere with one ion for amphetamine but not with the second ion. Expand
