Humivorous termites are dominant members of tropical rainforest soil communities. In the soil-feeding subfamily Apicotermitinae (Termitidae), the enteric valve connecting the first section of the hindgut to the paunch often displays a complex sclerotized armature everted towards the lumen of the paunch.
