The organization of collagen fibrils in the rat sciatic nerve was studied by scanning electron microscopy after digestion of cellular elements by sodium hydroxide treatment, and by conventional transmission electron microscopy. The epineurium consisted mainly of thick bundles of collagen fibrils measuring about 10–20 μm in width; they were wavy and ran slightly obliquely to the nerve axis.
