The current model of generative syntax focuses on hypo/hypertactic relations. This is the result of restrictions on phrase structure and transformations, “binary branching” for instance. Arguably, these restrictions establish a fruitful research strategy. However, at present we face the problem that a whole range of paratactic constructions such as coordination and parentheses cannot satisfactorily be dealt with. I think the scope of this problem can hardly be exaggerated. Therefore we need a…
Coordination and Syntactic Hierarchy
TLDR
The syntax of coordinate structures is discussed, in particular the status of initial coordinators, multiple coordination, and the asymmetries between conjuncts with respect to c-command relations, and an operation called b-Merge, which induces a special type of inclusion relation, 'behindance'.
A parenthetical approach to backward conjunction reduction
This paper identifies backward conjunction reductions in Dutch as a special instance of coordinated comment clauses. This approach is argued to be superior to the standard approaches within the
Optimality Theory and Human Sentence Processing: Towards a Cross-Modular Analysis of Coordination
TLDR
A model of human sentence processing that is based on Optimality Theory, which uses constraints from OT semantics rather than OT syntax to address on-line comprehension and yields concrete predictions with respect to both intermediate parsing preferences and final interpretations is proposed.
Clausal coordination and coordinative ellipsis in a model of the speaker
TLDR
A psycholinguistically inspired approach to the syntax of clause-level coordination and coordinate ellipsis, which appears to explain some general properties of coordinate structure: the existence of the well-known “coordinate structure constraint”, and the attractiveness of three-dimensional representations of coordination.
Towards a new typology of coordinated wh-questions1
In this paper, we develop a new typology of multiple wh-questions with coordinated wh-pronouns. We motivate the existence of three distinct structures for such questions: one mono-clausal and two
Hoofd-interne relatiefzinnen in het Nederlands
TLDR
All types of free relatives can occur in contrastive LD, but what seem to be universal free relatives in a hanging topic position are in fact embedded questions; this explains why pied piping is acceptable in hanging topic LD.
Optimality Theory and human sentence processing: The case of coordination
TLDR
A model of human sentence processing that is based on Optimality Theory (OT) is proposed, able to formalize this cross-modular constraint interaction, and to yield concrete predictions with respect to both intermediate parsing preferences and ultimate interpretations.
Kto i kogo udaril ? Russian who and whom hit ‘ Who and whom hit ? ’ ( Kazenin 2002 : 1 ) ( b ) *
In this paper, we develop a new typology of multiple wh-questions with coordinated wh-pronouns. We motivate the existence of three distinct structures for such questions: one mono-clausal and two
Parentheticals in Spoken English: The Syntax-Prosody Relation
TLDR
The syntax and prosody of parentheticals, intonational phrasing and prosodic theory, and data analysis, results and discussion.
Multimodal imaging of brain reorganization in hearing late learners of sign language
TLDR
The results showed complexity and temporal distinctiveness of various aspects of brain reorganization associated with learning of new language in different sensory modality.

For several decades, linguists (e.g., Dougherty 1970, Neijt 1979) have assumed that coordination could be described by X X (conj X)* or a variant of this phrase structure rule, where the Kleene star
Extraposition as Parallel Construal *
Extraposition phenomena are traditionally accounted for by extraposition rules, possibly as instances of "move alpha". According to the more recent developments of generative grammar, such as
Het schemergebied tussen pronomina en anaforen
The theory of referring elements anaphors, pronouns and mixed forms consists of two parts: a syntactic and a contextual one. The borderline between these is subject to debate. This is tightly related
A Restrictive Theory of Transformational Grammar
TLDR
A set theoretic formalization of a transformational theory in the spirit of Chomsky’s LSLT is presented, with particular attention to the constructs Phrase Marker and Transformational Cycle providing modifications which offer increases in both simplicity and explanatory power.
