We report on the first detailed analysis of large three dimensional (3D) complex plasma structures in experiments performed in pure rf and combined rf+dc discharge modes. Inductively coupled plasma is generated by an rf coil wrapped around the vertically positioned cylindrical glass tube at a pressure of 0.3 mbar. In addition, dc plasma can be generated by applying voltage to the electrodes at the ends of the tube far from the rf coil. The injected monodisperse particles are levitated in the…

Three-dimensional structure of a string-fluid complex plasma

Three-dimensional structure of complex (dusty) plasmas was investigated under long-term microgravity conditions in the International-Space-Station-based Plasmakristall-4 facility. The microparticle

Slowing of acoustic waves in electrorheological and string-fluid complex plasmas

The PK-4 laboratory consists of a direct current plasma tube into which microparticles are injected, forming a complex plasma. The microparticles acquire many electrons from the ambient plasma and

DPEx-II: a new dusty plasma device capable of producing large sized DC coulomb crystals

The creation of a spatially extended stable DC complex plasma crystal is a big experimental challenge and a topical area of research in the field of dusty plasmas. In this paper we describe a newly

Effect of Negative Ion Generation on Complex Plasma Structure Properties

We propose a low-density discharge plasma model that takes into account the impact of oxygen admixture in typical conditions of complex (dusty) plasmas. Numerical simulations based on this model show

Voids in Dusty Plasma of a Stratified DC Glow Discharge in Noble Gases

Experimental investigations of dusty plasma parameters of a DC glow discharge were performed in helium and argon. In the discharge in helium, at high discharge current dust‐free regions (voids) were

Formation and behavior of nanoparticles in a plasma: Dusty plasma instabilities.

The objective of this thesis is to study the formation of carbonaceous nanoparticles in a low pressure plasma. Dust particles are created by sputtering a polymer layer deposited on the bottom

Dust particles influence on a stratified glow discharge

In this work, the correlations between the parameters of a DC glow discharge and dust particles in a lowtemperature plasma is studied. The formation of voids inside the dust cloud was studied,

A distribution of the electric potentials around a charged absorbing particle in a drifting weakly ionised collisional plasma with negative ions is calculated in the linear hydrodynamic approach.

Influence of dust void on neon DC discharge

The diffusion/drift model of the positive column of glow discharge in neon with fine dust particles was used to study the role of a dust cloud with a void in the interaction between plasma and dust

Ion sphere model for Yukawa systems (dusty plasmas)

Application of the ion sphere model (ISM), well known in the context of the one-component-plasma, to estimate thermodynamic properties of model Yukawa systems is discussed. It is shown that the ISM

The first three-dimensional (3D) complex plasma structure analysis for an experiment that was performed in an elongated discharge tube in the absence of striations, which showed an ordered structure with a distinct outer particle shell.

Ordered structures in a nonideal dusty glow-discharge plasma

The formation of ordered structures of charged macroparticles in a constant-current neon glow-discharge plasma is investigated. Experiments were performed with two types of particles: thin-walled

Coulomb crystallization of monodisperse 9.4‐μm‐diam spheres confined in a plasma is investigated in a modified GEC rf Reference Cell using various gases and electrode topographies to reveal regions of two stable 3D configurations within the cloud.

Complex plasmas: An interdisciplinary research field

Complex (dusty) plasmas are composed of a weakly ionized gas and charged microparticles and represent the plasma state of soft matter. Complex plasmas have several remarkable features: Dynamical time

On melting criteria for complex plasma

The present paper considers melting criteria for a plasma crystal discovered in dust plasma in 1994. Separate discussions are devoted to three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) systems. In

Fluid-solid phase transitions in three-dimensional complex plasmas under microgravity conditions.

Investigation of phase behavior of large three-dimensional complex plasma systems under microgravity conditions onboard the International Space Station reveals that complex plasmas can exhibit melting by increasing the gas pressure.

Particle chains in a dilute dusty plasma with subsonic ion flow.

The chain appears to terminate with a final dust particle that is located in a dilute region; this observation suggests a possible attractive force in the longitudinal direction in the presence of a subsonic ion flow.

Structural properties of 3D complex plasmas: experiments versus simulations

In the paper we discuss recent observations of the three-dimensional plasma crystals created onboard the International Space Station under microgravity conditions. By using the special scanning
