Three Patterns to Support Empathy in Computer-Mediated Human Interaction

  title={Three Patterns to Support Empathy in Computer-Mediated Human Interaction},
  author={Michael J. Lyons and Daniel Kluender},
We present three patterns for computer-mediated interaction which we discovered during the design and development of a platform for remote teaching and learning of kanji, the Chinese characters used in written Japanese. Our aim in developing this system was to provide a basis for embodiment in remote interaction, and in particular to support the experience of empathy by both teacher and student. From this study, the essential elements are abstracted and suggested as design patterns for other…

A pattern approach to interaction design
An approach that uses pattern languages to capture knowledge in software development, human-computer interaction (HCI) and the application domain and a formal, domain-independent definition of design patterns is presented.
Empathy and consciousness.
This article makes five main points. (1) Individual human consciousness is formed in the dynamic interrelation of self and other, and therefore is inherently intersubjective. (2) The concrete
Visual Thinking
A visual note-taking style doesn’t only work for visual learners, but can also benefit people with different learning styles, so you can reach your full potential by tapping into your preferred learning style.
A Pattern Language - Towns, Buildings, Construction
This book will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment, which will replace existing ideas and practices entirely.
The coming age of calm technolgy
The important waves of technological change are those that fundamentally alter the place of technology in our lives. What matters is not technology itself, but its relationship to us.
The Timeless Way of Building
An apparatus for investigating the course of fast chemical reactions, which are initiated in a liquid chemical system under investigation by an external perturbation, e.g. a steep temperature rise (temperature jump), and an optical system of extremely high aperture which allows a wide variety of types of measurements.
