"In Cristo vale, specimen et lucerna amicorum dei!" With these words of praise Thomas Müntzer concluded his letter of 13 July 1520 to Martin Luther. It is a letter that could only have come from an admirer. Yet within two years the same Thomas Müntzer wrote a friend: "I, for one, have fled the scribes, pharisees and hypocrites [the Wittenberg theologians], Matthew 23, [because] their house is desolate, they do not possess the Holy Spirit."
