Immature Fasciola hepatica release 11 distinct proteases when cultured in vitro for 16 h as revealed by gelatin-substrate sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Six of these proteases are active in the pH range 4.5 to 8.0. Five are acid proteases, being most active in the pH range 3.0 to 4.5.
