The thermodynamics of the O(N) nonlinear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is studied. We calculate the pressure to next-to-leading order in the 1/N expansion and show that at this order, only the minimum of the effective potential can be rendered finite by temperature-independent renormalization. To obtain a finite effective potential away from the minimum requires an arbitrary choice of prescription, which implies that the temperature dependence is ambiguous. We show that the problem is linked to… Expand
Heating the O(N) nonlinear sigma model
The thermodynamics of the O(N) nonlinear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is studied. We calculate the finite temperature effective potential in leading order in the 1/N expansion and show that at thisExpand
Thermodynamics of the O(3) model in 1+1 dimensions: lattice vs. analytical results
A bstractA detailed study of the thermodynamics of the O(N = 3) model in 1+1 dimensions is presented, employing a two-particle-irreducible resummation prescription as well as fully nonperturbativeExpand
Bulk viscosity of the massive Gross-Neveu model
A calculation of the bulk viscosity for the massive Gross-Neveu model at zero fermion chemical potential is presented in the large-$N$ limit. This model resembles QCD in many important aspects: it isExpand
Spectral functions and critical dynamics of the O(4) model from classical-statistical lattice simulations
We calculate spectral functions of the relativistic $O(4)$ model from real-time lattice simulations in classical-statistical field theory. While in the low and high temperature phase of the model,Expand
Asymptotically Free Theory with Scale Invariant Thermodynamics
A recently developed variational resummation technique, incorporating renormalization group properties consistently, has been shown to solve the scale dependence problem that plagues the evaluationExpand
Bulk viscosity of the massive Gross‐Neveu model

Pion and kaon condensation at finite temperature and density
In this paper, we study O(2N)-symmetric {phi}{sup 4}-theory at finite temperature and density using the two-particle irreducible 1/N expansion. As specific examples, we consider pion condensation atExpand
Kaon condensation in the color–flavor-locked phase of quark matter, the Goldstone theorem, and the 2PI Hartree approximation
Abstract At very high densities, QCD is in the color–flavor-locked phase, which is a color-superconducting phase. The diquark condensates break chiral symmetry in the same way as it is broken inExpand
