We review and investigate the general theory of the thermodynamics of computation, and derive the fundamental inequalities that set the lower bounds of the work requirement and the heat emission during a computation. These inequalities constitute the generalized Landauer principle, where the information contents are involved in the second law of thermodynamics. We discuss in detail the relationship between the thermodynamic and logical reversibilities; the former is related to the entropy…

    Energy Limits in Computation

We present a pedagogical review of the fundamental concepts in thermodynamics of information, by focusing on the second law of thermodynamics and the entropy production. Especially, we discuss the
Direct measurement of weakly nonequilibrium system entropy is consistent with Gibbs–Shannon form
TLDR
By measuring the work required to erase a fraction of a bit of information, the change in entropy is isolated directly, showing that it is compatible with the functional form proposed by Shannon, demonstrating its physical meaning in this context.
Thermodynamics of information
By its very nature, the second law of thermodynamics is probabilistic, in that its formulation requires a probabilistic description of the state of a system. This raises questions about the
Role of conditional entropy in experimental tests of Landauer Principle
TLDR
It is shown that the conditional entropy can be nonzero even if the system is symmetric, and that it can be expressed as the sum of three different contributions associated with the probabilistic features of the system dynamics.
The Power of Being Explicit: Demystifying Work, Heat, and Free Energy in the Physics of Computation
TLDR
This chapter addresses widespread misconceptions about thermodynamics and the thermodynamics of computation, and analyses these ideas via an explicit biochemical representation of the entire cycle of Szilard's engine, showing that molecular computation is both a promising engineering paradigm, and a valuable tool in providing fundamental understanding.
Minimum energy dissipation required for a logically irreversible operation.
TLDR
The calculation results of work during the protocol showed that, while the minimum heat emission conforms to Landauer's principle, the free energy dissipation can be arbitrarily reduced by performing the protocol quasistatically.
The thermodynamic cost of quantum operations
The amount of heat generated by computers is rapidly becoming one of the main problems for developing new generations of information technology. The thermodynamics of computation sets the ultimate
Quantum Foundations of Classical Reversible Computing
TLDR
This paper begins developing an NEQT-based foundation for the physics of reversible computing with the framework of Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad dynamics with multiple asymptotic states, incorporating recent results from resource theory, full counting statistics and stochastic thermodynamics.
An Explanation of the Landauer bound and its ineffectiveness with regard to multivalued logic
Abstract We discuss, using recent results on the thermodynamics of multivalued logic, the difficulties and pitfalls of how to apply the Landauer’s principle to thermodynamic computer memory models.

Experimental verification of Landauer’s principle linking information and thermodynamics
TLDR
It is established that the mean dissipated heat saturates at the Landauer bound in the limit of long erasure cycles, demonstrating the intimate link between information theory and thermodynamics and highlighting the ultimate physical limit of irreversible computation.
The thermodynamic meaning of negative entropy
TLDR
The main result is that the work cost of erasure is determined by the entropy of the system, conditioned on the quantum information an observer has about it, which gives a direct thermodynamic significance to conditional entropies, originally introduced in information theory.

TLDR
The most general statement of Landauer's principle is derived and its universality is proved, extending considerably the validity of previous proofs and confirming conjectures made that all logical operations may, in principle, be performed in a thermodynamically reversible fashion, although logically irreversible operations would require special, practically rather difficult, conditions to do so.
Colloquium: Quantum fluctuation relations: Foundations and applications
Two fundamental ingredients play a decisive role in the foundation of fluctuation relations: the principle of microreversibility and the fact that thermal equilibrium is described by the Gibbs
Second law of thermodynamics with discrete quantum feedback control.
TLDR
A new thermodynamic inequality is derived which leads to the maximum work that can be extracted from multi-heat-baths with the assistance of discrete quantum feedback control, and this maximum work can exceed that in conventional thermodynamics.

TLDR
A generalized version of the fluctuation theorem is derived for stochastic, microscopically reversible dynamics and this generalized theorem provides a succinct proof of the nonequilibrium work relation.

TLDR
