Thermal behaviour of crustaceans
@article{Lagerspetz2006ThermalBO, title={Thermal behaviour of crustaceans}, author={Kari Y. H. Lagerspetz and Liisa A. Vainio}, journal={Biological Reviews}, year={2006}, volume={81} }
Specific thermoreceptors or putative multimodal thermoreceptors are not known in Crustacea. However, behavioural studies on thermal avoidance and preference and on the effects of temperature on motor activity indicate that the thermosensitivity of crustaceans may be in the range 0.2–2°C. Work on planktonic crustaceans suggests that they respond particularly to changes in temperature by klinokinesis and orthokinesis. The thermal behaviour of crustaceans is modified by thermal acclimation among…

Preference Versus Performance: Body Temperature of the Intertidal Snail Chlorostoma funebralis
- Environmental ScienceThe Biological Bulletin
- 2011
In laboratory experiments, the intertidal snail Chlorostoma funebralis was allowed to position itself on a temperature gradient, then measured its thermal preference and determined an index of how its performance varied with temperature, which resulted in a biased random walk along the temperature gradient.
Effect of thermal acclimation on thermal preference, resistance and locomotor performance of hatchling soft-shelled turtle
- Environmental Science
- 2013
Hatchlings acclimated to relatively warm temperatures have a better performance, supporting the "hotter is better" hy- pothesis, and the locomotor performance of turtles was affected by both body temperature and acclimation temps.

It is suggested that the decline in EJP amplitude and time constant of decay produced by deviations in temperature from the acclimation temperature is compensated for by an increase in the amount of facilitation, so that maximum tension can be produced by the stretcher muscle in a range of at least 8 degrees C around the acclamation temperature.

A comparison of winter and summer lobsters, both held at 15 degrees C for more than 4 weeks, revealed that although their responses to temperature changes were similar, winter lobsters had a significantly lower baseline heart rate and a shorter duration cardiac response than summer lobster, suggesting that some temperature-independent seasonal modulation of cardiac activity may be occurring.

This paradigm, developed for use with fishes, can also be applied to other ectothermic taxa, although it is most easily employed with aquatic organisms because of the simplicity of specifying aquatic thermal environments in terms of water temperature alone.
