Plasma concentrations obtained during routine therapeutic monitoring of antiepileptic drugs (AED) (N03A ATC group) were compared in patients treated with one or several AED in the University Hospitals in Ostrava, Czech Republic and Huddinge, Sweden. Request and reply forms for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) were used as a source of mean plasma concentrations (PC). The study included 2,824 adult out- and inpatients in Huddinge treated from 1995 to 1999 and 1,268 outpatients treated in Ostrava…
The Use of TDM Data to Assess the Validity of Defined Daily Doses of Antiepileptics: A Comparison Between a Czech and Swedish University Hospital
TLDR
The data suggest that the DDDs of AEDs should be reconsidered as, in the majority of cases, they appear to be too high.
Antiepileptic drug utilization in Taiwan: Analysis of prescription using National Health Insurance database
TLDR
In Taiwan antiepileptic drug therapies appear to be still dominated by the first generation drugs, and the mean dosages of most antiePileptic drugs were lower than that of WHO suggested.
The Laboratory Should Actively be Involved in the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) Process
TLDR
The study results suggested that digoxin tests were mostly requested to confirm drug toxicity while neuorologic drug requests mostly aimed to manage drug dosage.
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Carbamazepine
TLDR
Review is mostly centred on toxic effects, poorly adjusted therapies and poor seizure control, and individualization of drug dose with the help of plasma level detection is a must in case of Carbamazepine therapy.
Development and validation of an HPLC method for determination of carbamazepine in human plasma and applications to a therapeutic drug monitoring study
Background and Aims: Carbamazepine (CBZ) is an antiepileptic drug, which is prescribed as a first-line drug for the treatment of partial and generalized tonic–clonic epileptic seizures. The aim of
Simultaneous determination of antiepileptic drugs and their two active metabolites by HPLC.
An HPLC procedure for the determination of lamotrigine (LAM) simultaneously with other antiepileptic drugs, primidone (PD), phenobarbital (PB), phenytoin (DPH), carbamazepine (CMZ), and two active
Estimation of the Initial Dose Setting of Vancomycin Therapy With Use of Cystatin C as a New Marker of Renal Function
TLDR
It is suggested that serum cystatin C is a good marker of renal function in comparison with serum creatinine for dose setting of vancomycin, especially in an elderly population.

Differences between prescribed daily doses and defined daily doses of antiepileptics--therapeutic drug monitoring as a marker of the quality of the treatment.
TLDR
PDDs in monotherapy were similar or slightly lower than in combination therapy with an exception for lamotrigine, NS and plasma levels tended to be below the therapeutic range.
Evaluation of therapeutic drug monitoring of antiepileptic drugs.
TLDR
Results of the therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of the concentration of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) performed at Aseer Central Hospital over a 1-year period were evaluated, with phenytoin (PHT) determination followed by carbamazepine (CBZ), valproic acid (VPA) and phenobarbital (PB).
Clinical Pharmacokinetics of Antiepileptic Drugs in Paediatric Patients
TLDR
The pharmacokinetic information in the paediatric literature may help in assessing AED prescriptions in childhood to prevent seizures and AED-related adverse effects on the ongoing maturational processes of the brain.
Digoxin and Phenytoin analyses as part of consultations in clinical pharmacology: a study on the use of drugs.
TLDR
The clinical use of digoxin and phenytoin analyses furnished by the clinical pharmacological laboratory during a five-month period was evaluated prospectively from request forms, with a significant change towards lower values compared to an earlier study.
Clinical Pharmacokinetics of Antiepileptic Drugs in Paediatric Patients
TLDR
The clearance (CL/F) of valproic acid positively correlates with the unbound concentrations and is strongly age-dependent, being low in neonates and high at the end of the first postnatal month, and progressively decreasing from 2 months to 14 years.
Influence of Phenytoin and phenobarbital on the disposition of a single oral dose of clonazepam
TLDR
Both DPH and PB increased CZP clearances and decreased the areas under the plasma concentration‐time curves without altering the volumes of distribution, consistent with induction of CZp metabolism.
Harnessing the Clinical Potential of Antiepileptic Drug Therapy
TLDR
D dosage regimens of AEDs should be assessed regularly, and adjusted if necessary, so that patients can derive optimal therapeutic benefit and avoid most — if not all — adverse effects.
A Mechanistic Approach to Antiepileptic Drug Interactions

TLDR
By understanding the mechanisms of drug interactions, the pharmacist can play a key role in patient care by anticipating and preventing AED drug interactions.
Epileptic seizures in a population of 6000. I: Demography, diagnosis and classification, and role of the hospital services.
TLDR
A total of 122 patients with a history of non-febrile epileptic seizures were identified in a survey of 6000 persons from a single general practice, finding diagnosis and classification of seizures in such a survey were difficult.
