A theory is given of the nuclear hyperfine structure of the paramagnetic resonance in hydrated crystals. Starting from the states of a free ion, neglecting spin-dependent terms in the energy, successive steps of perturbation calculation introduce the effect of the crystalline electric field, the spin-orbit and spin-spin interactions, the coupling with an external magnetic field, and the coupling between the nucleus of the ion and the electrons. The self-consistent field approximation, in which…
Results and Theory of Paramagnetic Resonance
In passing from the study of gaseous microwave spectroscopy to that of paramagnetic resonance, the consideration of individual molecules is changing to that of atoms, or ions, embedded in the crystal
Nuclear Moments and Intermediate Coupling
The effect of intermediate coupling on the calculation of the nuclear moments of the rare earths from analyses of hyperfine structure is examined. It is shown that the observed hyperfine splittings
Quadrupole Effects in Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectra of Polycrystalline Copper and Cobalt Complexes
A second-order theory, including quadrupole effects and transitions with Δm I > 0, for the calculation of EPR spectra of polycrystalline samples of S = ½ transition-metal ion complexes possessing
Low-symmetry effects in electron paramagnetic resonance
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is a well-established technique for investigating the properties of metal ions in crystals, chemical complexes and biological molecules. It provides information
Effect of Anisotropic Hyperfine Interactions on Paramagnetic Relaxation in Liquids
A simple ``microcrystalline model'' is developed to discuss the effect of molecular motion in the liquid state on the paramagnetic relaxation of ions or molecules with spin S = ½. This theory relates
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectra of Copper Complexes
The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of a number of copper complexes and of vanadyl acetylacetonate were measured in solution and in the vitreous state. By a judicious choice of various
Theory of the Electron Spin Resonance of Benzene in the Triplet State
The splitting of the energy levels of the lowest triplet state of the benzene molecule has been calculated. The splittings were calculated with the aid of first‐order perturbation theory from
Electron spin resonance of X-ray irradiated single crystals of ammonium paramolybdate tetrahydrate
The paramagnetic species produced by x-ray irradiation of single crystals of ammonium paramolybdate (NH4)6Mo7O24. 4H2O has been studied by E.S.R. spectroscopy. Only one of the seven Mo nuclei was
Matrix Effects on the Electron Spin Resonance Spectra of Trapped Hydrogen Atoms
A study is made of the matrix effects on the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of hydrogen atoms stabilized in nonpolar matrices. It is assumed that the perturbing effect of the matrix consists
