In this work, the teaching content of a theoretical-chemistry (TC) course is reformed, establishing a theoretical contents from microto macro-system, and comprehensively introducing the theory of chemical reaction to undergraduate students in chemistry. In order to develop such TC course based on the general physical-chemistry course, we focus on the “last-mile” problem between the physics and chemistry courses to train the critical thinking of undergraduate students in chemistry. To clearly…

Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation to Reinforce Student Understanding of Intermolecular Forces

Intermolecular forces play an important role in many aspects of chemistry ranging from inorganic to biological chemistry. These forces dictate molecular conformation, species aggregation (including

Using Computer Assisted Learning to Teach Molecular Reaction Dynamics

We have developed a Computer Assisted Learning program to aid in the teaching of molecular reaction dynamics to undergraduate students. Dynamic and steric factors affecting reaction outcomes are

Modeling the Hydrogen Bond within Molecular Dynamics

Molecular mechanics was given a major impetus by the seminal paper, "Molecular Dynamics Study of Liquid Water", by Rahman and Stillinger. The broad sweep of that article, using a model developed in

Analytical Chemistry: A Chemist and Laboratory Technician's Toolkit

A comprehensive study of analytical chemistry providing the basics of analytical chemistry and introductions to the laboratory • Covers the basics of a chemistry lab including lab safety, glassware,

A hands-on introduction to molecular dynamics

We present an introduction to the chemical and computational aspects of the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation technique. Using just a few elementary ideas from classical mechanics and numerical

Peer Instruction in the General Chemistry Laboratory: Assessment of Student Learning

The Peer-Led Teaching and Learning (Workshop) model has been applied since 1998 to a subset of all General Chemistry laboratory sections at the University of Pittsburgh. In the workshop model, the ...

Open-Access, Interactive Explorations for Teaching and Learning Quantum Dynamics

While the research field of quantum dynamics (QD) benefits from advances in modern computational power, the educational field of QD paradoxically does not. We have developed an open-access,

Statistical Mechanics:

AbstractPROF. R. H. FOWLER'S monumental work on statistical mechanics has, in this the second edition, in his own modest words, been rearranged and brought more up to date. But the new volume is much

Observation of the geometric phase effect in the H + HD → H2 + D reaction

A high-resolution crossed molecular beams study of the H + HD → H2 + D reaction at a collision energy slightly above the conical intersection reveals fast angular oscillations in product quantum state–resolved differential cross sections in the forward scattering direction for H2 products at specific rovibrational levels.

A tractable numerical model for exploring nonadiabatic quantum dynamics

Numerous computational and spectroscopic studies have demonstrated the decisive role played by nonadiabatic coupling in photochemical reactions. Nonadiabatic coupling drives photochemistry when
