The ®rst description of Thelazia lacrymalis (Gurlt 1831) may in fact refer to natural infections of horses in Germany; the origin of the horses, however, was not discussed. The only account reporting this spiruroid nematode explicitly in Germany (Eckert 1992) is based on a misinterpreted case report, which described an ulcerous conjunctivitis caused by T. lacrymalis in Egypt (Schebitz 1960).
