The human papillomavirus types 16 (HPV-16) and 18 (HPV-18) can immortalize primary human keratinocytes. The region of the viral genome responsible for this function maps to the E6 and E7 genes and their respective upstream transcriptional regulatory sequences, the long control regions (LCRs).
